From Symmetry of Knots to Symmetry of Graphs (December 2011)
On behalf of Mathematics and Statistics Department under the College of Arts and Sciences, you are cordially invited on a Seminar to be conducted by Dr. Nafaa Chbili from UAE University.
Abstract: We start by a brief introduction to Knot theory and its applications in the field of molecular Biology. Then, we will explain how the quantum invariants are used to study the symmetries of knots and links. The main part of the talk will focus on the extension of these results to the study of symmetries of graphs and spatial graphs using polynomial invariants such as the Tutte and the Yamada polynomial. This extension is obtained through the introduction of a theory of skein modules of three-manifolds based on ribbon graphs.
