Economic Growth in Korea (November 2014)
The Department of Economics presents a lecture by Dr. Sukwoo Hong.
Come and listen to the story of phenomenal economic growth in Korea from someone who has helped set up its economic and development policies at the center. Dr. Hong has held a number of key positions in the Korean government. He was the head of the Small-Medium Business Administration, which is in charge of policies for small-medium industries. He was the president and CEO of KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Corporation), the name of which speaks loudly about its mission. And most importantly, he was the Minister of the Knowledge Economy. The ministry used to be called the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, but is currently called the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Resources. The ministry is in charge of industrial, trade, and resources policies in Korea. Along with the Economic Planning Board (at the helm and, now, defunct) and the Ministry of Finance, this ministry has been the crucial part of industrialization and economic development policy making in Korea.
