AUS delegation Secures Honorable Mention at National Model United Nations in NY
A seven-student delegation from the Office of Student Affairs' Student Leadership Program (SLP) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) secured Honorable Mention Award at the National Model United Nations (NMUN) held in New York from March 24-29, 2013.
NMUN is considered to be the most prestigious model UN conferences in the world where students from more than 5,000 universities all across the world participate in a simulation of the various UN Committees to debate and resolve pressing world issues. The theme of this year's conference was "Change Your World" and the AUS delegation represented Singapore in seven different committees such as the General Assembly, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the Special Committee on Peacekeeping, etc.
The closing ceremony was held in the United Nations Headquarters in New York where universities were honored for their hard work and commitment over the course of the conference.
"It has been an honor to represent American University of Sharjah as the delegation of Singapore at the 2013 National Model United Nations. In this era of globalization, learning about the world around us is of a much importance especially when understood and learnt from other countries' points of view than your own home country. NMUN is the best environment that enables students of different professions and majors to learn more about the numerous problems facing the world, to identify the complexities in trying to find suitable solutions, and to highlight the role of the United Nations in solving such issues as the world's peace promoting agency. NMUN also offers a significant opportunity to interact with students from all over the world with their cultural diversities and various backgrounds in order to share our views, experiences, and learn from each other. By looking back on my experience at the NMUN, I could conclude that the NMUN has provided an excellent, unique, safe, and well-structured environment for me to develop my leadership, researching, public speaking, writing, negotiating, and team-working skills. I would highly recommend NMUN to any student who wants to gain a better understanding of the world of diplomacy, the international affairs, and the work of the UN," said Amna Fikri, senior student majoring in International Relations.
"NMUN was a life-changing event that introduced you to amazing people from all over the world. The interaction with delegates about pressing international issues, and the spirit of unity that we shared to reach compromises enriched my life greatly and also enabled me to view the world from a different perspective. The experience and memories gained from participating in this event will be cherished for many years to come," said Cicily Roy, senior student majoring in International Studies.
"I am so thankful to the SLP for giving me this opportunity. It has always been my dream to work for the United Nations, and SLP allowed me to experience that through NMUN. I have learned a lot about diplomacy, dispute resolution and public speaking through NMUN, and I feel like I have emerged a much better version of myself after this conference," said Arfah Siddiqi, a junior student majoring in Journalism and International Studies who said NMUN reinforced her ambition of working for the United Nations, and said that the entire experience was immensely motivating.
"The experience of the National Model United Nations in New York is very valuable to our students as it enables them to interact with students from colleges and universities around the world. It gives first-hand experience that aids in the development of various skills such as communication, art of negotiation, research and understanding of global issues. It is a prestigious distinction for AUS to secure Honorable Mention Award by one of the smallest delegations in NMUN. Our students prepared well, did excellent research, and exhibited full dedication for this event to eventually achieve this award," said Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
