Piping Engineering in GCC and MENA (February 2012)
Overview
Blessed with abundant hydrocarbon resources, both oil and gas, the GCC and MENA countries display highest density of hydrocarbon exploration and upstream/downstream processing industries anywhere in the world. The scale of processing and transportation of petroleum crude, gas and petroleum products is unmatched. At the same time, GCC countries are deprived by nature of natural sweet water resources and instead offered vast stretches of sea. Processing of sea water to derive water for drinking and irrigation, and often simultaneous production of electricity are also practiced on extremely large scale in these countries. Transportation of water across thousands of kilometers is another operation at amazing scale on proud display. The vast coastline has also given birth to an equally vast ship-building industry. All these industries have given rise to an unprecedented demand for piping engineers in this area. This presentation will review in details the importance of Piping Engineering in GCC and MENA countries.
A presentation by: Prof. Arun S. Moharir
Prof. Arun S. Moharir is a professor of chemical Engineering at the IIT Bombay (Indian Institute of Technology Bombay) for the last 25 years. The piping engineering course was initiated and designed by him in 1990 along with Mr. T. N. Gopinath who is an eminent piping engineer with 40 years of experience in the field.

IIT Bombay (Indian Institute of Technology Bombay) is an institute of high repute and is known for the quality of its engineering education. It was the first institute to recognize the importance of piping engineering in industrial design and engineering. It developed content of a comprehensive training program covering all aspects of piping engineering such as pipe sizing, mechanical design, codes and standards, piping elements and valve selection, water hammer and surge analysis, thermal flexibility analysis, comprehensive stress analysis, selection of supports and expansion joints, plot plan, equipment and piping layout, piping drawings etc. The course has trained close to 10,000 engineers worldwide over two decades. The course was introduced in its on-line version in 2009, and is now available for registration.
