Nanoengineering of Interfacial Geometries for Minimal Energy Electronic Systems (March 2015)
A significant portion of research, development and post-baccalaureate training of students in modern informationprocessing and storage fields is dedicated to the design and nanofabrication ofnovel minimal energy electronic systems (MEES). This is an imperative bothwithin more-Moore and more-than-Moore paradigms. In this seminar talk, I will discuss twosystems that fall in the above categories: design, nanofabrication andcharacterization of nanocontacts to nanowires, and the novel approach todesigning magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), so that both systems satisfy theMEES criteria. End and side contactsgeometry is a subject of research efforts because of its potential to alter andaugment nanoscale transport of electric charge. I will also revisit elementary, tri-layer design of MTJs in order todemonstrate how MTJs' functionality could be preserved while decreasing theoverall energy of their operation, which opens a path towards novelnanomagnetic memory elements, switches and sensors. Just like in the case ofnanocontacts to nanowires, this modification of the MTJs is driven by thenanoengineering of interfacial geometry.
The speaker is Dr. AbdelIsakovic, associate professor at Khalifa University.
