China and the Arabian Gulf: Bridging the Macro and the Micro Approaches (November 2018)
Through trade, investment, and the expansion of its multinational corporations, China has evolved into an important player in the Arabian Gulf in the last two decades. While the macro shifts in the politico-economic landscapes in the region are vitally important to understanding China-Arab bilateral relations, such a macro-perspective tells us little about the dynamic flows between these two regions, especially the flows of people and ideas. Examining the social and cultural ties at the grassroots level not only provides useful insight in the study of China-Gulf and China-Arab relations, but also enriches our understanding of the impact of global migration on urban development in emerging global cities in the region.
Supported by a grant from the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE), this workshop seeks to provide a platform for both well-established and emerging local, regional, and global scholars to enter dialogues on the implications of China’s growing influence in the Arabian Gulf and the broader Middle East. During the two-day workshop, scholars will engage with macro-level considerations of the political economy in the region, and the micro-level analyses of multiple flows between China and the Arabian Gulf. We aim at producing an edited volume on China-Gulf relations based on the papers presented at the workshop.
