Some Beautiful Numbers (February 2024)
“Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth but supreme beauty—a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature. The true spirit of delight, the exaltation, the sense of being more than Man, which is the touchstone of the highest excellence, is to be found in mathematics as surely as poetry.” —Bertrand Russel.
In this talk, I will explore the beauty of some numbers; no proof will be given. I will end the talk by pretending to be a “magician” and performing some tricks that might take your breath away. The talk is accessible to all students, regardless of their area of interest.
