AUS Library Ed Talks: Author Talk with Dr. Anoud Abusalim (September 2024)
Dr. Anoud Abusalim, Department of English, will present on her recently published chapter "Fake It till You Make It: Predatory Publishing Realities in the Arab World" from the edited book, Predatory Practices in Scholarly Publishing and Knowledge Sharing: Causes and Implications for Scholarship (Routledge 2023).
Absract: Drawing on decoloniality theory, the book chapter critically examines the traditional perception of predatory publishing, which characterizes researchers who have fallen victim to predatory outlets as unwitting prey.
By focusing its analysis on the predatory publishing landscape in the Arab world, the chapter investigates the factors that drive Arabic-speaking researchers to publish in predatory journals. The book chapter highlights the scarcity of Arabic-medium journals and the increasing emphasis on English-language publications as significant factors influencing researchers' decisions to publish in predatory outlets. Moreover, the chapter explores how the medium of instruction in Arab universities shapes researchers’ publishing choices, and how the growing institutional research requirements contribute to the prevalence of predatory publishing practices. The chapter argues that predatory journals serve as convenient platforms for disseminating research within the global knowledge production context, particularly when the research addresses local issues.
In conclusion, the chapter argues that a comprehensive solution to predatory publishing requires addressing the broader issues within the academic ecosystem in addition to supporting researchers in their pursuit of high-quality and ethical publishing opportunities.
