AUS celebrates 51st UAE National Day
American University of Sharjah (AUS) celebrated the 51st UAE National Day at a special event held on campus on November 29.
Organized by the Emirati Cultural Club and the Office of Student Affairs, this year's celebrations were held under the theme of “patriotism and unity” in line with the general theme of National Day celebrations across the nation.
The celebration was filled with activities highlighting the nation's rich culture and heritage. Symbolic of local hospitality, the main entrance featured a walk-through light hallway and a traditional majlis. The AUS plaza was adorned with seven traditional tents, each representing an emirate.
“I congratulate the great leaders and the people of the UAE on the occasion of the 51st UAE National Day. We take pride in celebrating the many accomplishments and great successes of this nation” said Haifa Ismail, Director of Student Leadership and Engagement at AUS.
In addition, cultural stage performances, including a song performance by an AUS student and traditional Al-Yola dance, were highlights of the evening.
“Our special thanks to the officers and members of the Emirati Cultural Club for hosting a celebration on campus for the AUS community to attend and express solidarity with this great nation and our appreciation to Shurooq for their contributions as a Gold Sponsor for the event” added Ismail.
Speaking on the event, Mohamed Alharmoodi, Vice President of the Emirati Cultural Club and an AUS senior, said: “On the occasion of UAE’s 51st National Day, we take pride in what our country has achieved over these years; this significant event shares a glimpse of what the UAE has to offer.”
More tents hosted a myriad of activities and displays, such as a falcon, the UAE's national bird. Others hosted an Emirati-themed photo booth, illustration and henna artists, live cooking of luqaimat, and a showcase of business start-ups by Emirati AUS students.
