AUSAA holds successful First Alumni Soccer Tournament
Nearly 80 AUS alumni participated in a soccer tournament organized by American University of Sharjah Alumni Association (AUSAA) and the university's Office of Development and Alumni Affairs (ODAA). The event was held recently as part of this year's AUS Alumni Events.
The indoor soccer tournament, which was held at Al Noor Centre for Special Needs in Dubai, was inaugurated by Dr. Peter Heath, AUS Chancellor; Dr. Nada Mourtada-Sabbah, Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Affairs; and alumnus Eisa Al-Ali, President of AUSAA. Dr. Mark Rush, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was also present on the occasion.
Four teams qualified for the semi-finals and finals rounds. The teams were Civil Engineering, ASP, InterMilan and Moataz's Team. InterMilan and ASP faced each other in the finals in which InterMilan successfully beat ASP, by three goals to two, during the last minutes of the game.
The tournament was very exciting in the sense that it was great to see alumni who graduated between 2001and 2010 all participating together in this healthy competition," said alumnus Rami Jaber, AUSAA Events Chapter Representative. "Even though it was just football, new friendships have been formed and an increasing interest from all participating alumni on how to be more active in their association was clearly noticed," added Jaber.
After the final match, Al-Ali presented Mohammad Zaki Hamdan (captain of InterMilan), Ahmad Bensasi, Yousif Habil, El-Tayeb Yousif, Bahja Nasr, Mina Yaqoub, Mahmoud Ghadban, Ali Berri and Khaled Belhoul with gold medals and the tournament's trophy and crowned them champions of the first AUS Alumni Soccer Tournament. He also presented team ASP with the silver medals and team Civil Engineering with the bronze medals for securing second and third place, respectively.
