Over 1,200 students attend AUS Sharakah Sports Festival
More than 1,200 students formed 130 teams to compete for the Sharakah Cup held at American University of Sharjah (AUS) earlier this week. The Sharakah Sports Festival 2018 saw students from AUS’s Sharakah partner schools in Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain compete in football, volleyball, basketball and table tennis tournaments. The event is an AUS community outreach program that encourages students from grades 10 to 12 at Sharakah schools to embrace good sportsmanship and fitness.
Initiated by the AUS Office of Enrollment Management, Sharakah is a partnership program between AUS and select high schools to engage with the university’s strategic initiative to create a platform for cooperation in various academic and non-academic areas. These include the engagement of teachers and students through training sessions, workshops, as well as cultural, social and sporting activities.
Speaking on the occasion, Ali Shuhaimy, Executive Director of Enrollment Management, said:
“We believe this event provides a great opportunity for AUS to exhibit its commitment to community engagement and to strengthen its ties with feeder schools. We were pleased with the turnout at the event and were very happy to showcase AUS’s state-of-the-art sports facilities and our beautiful campus. We look forward to organizing similar events in the future.”
The 21 schools participating in the sports festival were Al Shola Private (Girls), Madar School, Internatioal School of Arts and Sciences, Shola Private School (Boys), Al Marifa Private International School, Sharjah American International School- Sharjah, Rawafed Private School, Al Nahda National School (Boys), Al Nahda National School (Girls), International Community School, Al Mawakeb School–Al Garhoud, Al Mawakeb School–Al Barsha, Al Durrah International School, Philadelphia Private School, Sharjah American International School–Dubai, Dawha School, Liwa School, Dubai International School–Al Qouz, Dubai International School–Garhoud, Victoria English School, and Al Zuhour Private School.
The winners were:
- Basketball:
- First place – boys: Philadelphia Private School
- First place – girls: Sharjah American International School–Dubai
- Volleyball:
- First place – boys: Philadelphia Private School
- First place – girls: Sharjah American International School–Dubai
- Football:
- First place – boys: International School of Arts and Sciences and Dubai International School
- First place – girls: Al Mawakeb School–Al Garhoud
- 100m race:
- First place – boys: Ehsan Nader from Sharjah American International School–Dubai
- First place –girls: Nada Waleed from Sharjah American International School–Sharjah
- Table tennis:
- First place – boys: Abdul Aziz from Dawha School
For the first time, AUS introduced two new cups for Sportsmanship and the Overall Champion to promote fair play, discipline and commitment on playgrounds. Philadelphia Private School won the Sportsmanship Cup, while the Overall Champion Cup went to Al Mawakeb School – Al Garhoud Campus.
The event also welcomed players’ families and the AUS community at large to enjoy outdoor fun. The estimated total number of people attending the festival exceeded 1,500.
