AUS clubs collaborate for breast cancer awareness campaign

American University of Sharjah (AUS) is holding a Breast Cancer Awareness week on campus to commemorate the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign, which aims to raise funds and awareness of breast cancer, is taking place at the Student Center on campus and will conclude on October 29, 2015.

Organized by Office of Student Affairs' Community Services Division and the Student Council, in collaboration with the Gastronomy Club, Women Empowerment Club, Photography Club, Student Residential Life Association and the Bahraini Cultural Club, the campaign includes various fundraising activities such as hair, henna and nail polish stations, as well as photography services and food for sale.

Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Dean of Students at AUS said, "We conduct this week-long campaign on campus annually to spread breast cancer awareness among students and the AUS community. It is very important for women to be aware of the early signs of breast cancer and be knowledgeable about how to conduct self-tests. We emphasize the importance of timely screening and early detection of the disease."

"As we encourage more students to get involved, the Student Council and student clubs responded by jointly organizing various awareness activities in addition to raising funds that will be donated to Pink Caravan for breast cancer research and for the treatment of breast cancer patients. I thank our students for their time and efforts throughout the week," added Dr. Al Shehhi.

Representatives of the Pink Caravan, a breast cancer awareness initiative by Friends of Cancer Patients, distributed informational material to raise awareness of the disease, providing instructions on how to conduct self-tests as well as highlighting the importance of early detection.

"The collaboration between the different AUS clubs is helping the community raise funds towards breast cancer research and treatment and to highlight the importance of detecting the disease in its early stages. We are very proud of the combined efforts we are putting towards this important issue," said Aljawhara Aljuwaied, a sophomore majoring in international relations and an activity coordinator.
