AUS hosts first Arabian Nights event
American University of Sharjah (AUS) hosted its first annual Arabian Nights event on Wednesday, November 18, 2015. The event highlighted and celebrated the different cultures, customs and traditions within the Arab region.
The event was opened by Dr. Björn Kjerfve and attended by Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Dean of Students. Organized by the AUS Office of Student Affairs, the event was also attended by various members within the AUS community including AUS faculty, staff and their families as well as crowds of students.
AUS has a very high percentage of students, faculty and staff from various Arab nations and the Arabian Nights event provided a platform where these different nationalities and their cultures and traditions could be celebrated.
Gaith Ataya, a junior majoring in chemical engineering, and a member of the Syrian Cultural Club, said, "We are glad to introduce and be introduced to the different nationalities in the AUS community. It is a great way to interact and be educated about others' traditions and customs."
Arabian Nights showcased 10 different nationalities within the Arab World. The cultural clubs participating included the Emirati, Saudi Arabian, Bahraini, Omani, Iraqi, Palestinian, Jordanian, Lebanese, Syrian, and Egyptian Cultural Clubs.
The cultural clubs set up tents on the AUS Main Plaza where they shared aspects of their cultures through presentations, food, and performances.
