Overview
Second Mini-Symposium and Workshop on Design for Fire Resistance in Structures.
Recent large fires in residential and industrial complexes across the region and nation have triggered a need for education about fire safety in building design, construction and maintenance.
This two-day symposium will focus on the theoretical and practical aspects of fire engineering in relation to structural stability in fire. The speakers will initiate an introduction to the concepts of fire engineering of structures and safety, and will present recent technological advancements. The response of steel and concrete structures during fire, including transportation structures, will be discussed, along with strategies for enhancing their fire performance.
The symposium will focus on the design, behavior and analytical modeling of structural systems under extreme fire conditions and material properties at elevated temperatures. Guidelines for enhancing the fire resistance of structural systems will be presented. The latest philosophies in performance-based fire safety design and analysis of structures in fire will be presented along with evidence from real building fires.
Changes due to elevated temperatures in the mechanical properties of construction materials, such as steel, concrete and advanced engineered materials such as fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) used in strengthening structural materials, will be discussed. The effect on design of structures with such changes in the material properties at elevated temperatures will be covered.

About the Presenters
Dr. Venkatesh Kodur
Dr. Venkatesh Kodur is a Professor and Director of the Center on Structural Fire Engineering and Diagnostics at Michigan State University. His research interests include evaluation of fire resistance of structural systems through large-scale fire experiments and numerical modeling and characterization of materials under high temperature. His research contributions have led to the development of a fundamental understanding on the fire behavior of material and structural systems and also resulted in numerous design approaches and innovative and cost-effective solutions for enhancing fire-resistance of structural systems. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers in journals and conference proceedings, and has given numerous invited keynote presentations. Professor Kodur is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and also a Foreign Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering.
He is a professional engineer, Fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers, Fellow of American Concrete Institute, Associate Editor of Journal of Structural Engineering, Chairman of ACI Fire Protection Committee, Chairman of ASCE-29 (Fire) Standards Committee and a member of UK-EPSRC College of Reviewers. He has won many awards including AISC Faculty Fellowship Award, MSU Distinguished Faculty Award, NRCC (Government of Canada) Outstanding Achievement Award and NATO Award for collaborative research. Dr. Kodur was part of the FEMA/ASCE Building Performance Assessment Team that studied the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings in New York as a result of the September 11, 2001 incidents.
Dr. Susan Lamont
Dr. Susan Lamont, CEng MSFPE, is an Associate Director at Arup Gulf Ltd. Dr. Lamont has worked in the fire protection industry for 12 years in the UK, US and Middle East. She is a chartered engineer and professional member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE). Her doctorate research looked at the response of composite steel frame structures in real post-flashover fires. Since joining Arup, she has worked on a diverse range of projects from large assembly buildings, hospitals, schools, shopping malls and offices to master plans and transport hubs. Her role on many projects is to guide the developer/owner through fire safety design, testing and commissioning to occupation and wherever possible to fire safety management of the completed building. She is currently leader of the fire engineering team for Arup in the Middle East. She works closely with her clients and the local authorities in the Gulf to maintain a high level of fire safety in new and existing buildings.
