Lecture by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Architects (April 2021)
Specificity: The speakers will talk about rooting a project in a place. Their work recognizes and responds to the fabric of the site. They try to understand the human culture as well as the material culture. Globalization is a fact, but it does not erase the desire we have to recognize our place in the world. The speakers will also discuss their projects in India, Hong Kong and Chicago.
About the speakers
Tod Williams and Billie Tsien founded their New York architecture office in 1986. Their studio focuses on work for schools, museums, and not-for-profits. Some of their notable projects include The Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, and they are currently designers of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Their work has been recognized by numerous citations including the Praemium Imperiale from the Japan Art Association, National Medal of the Arts from President Obama and the 2013 AIA Architecture Firm Award. In parallel with their practice, Tod and Billie maintain active academic careers and lecture worldwide.
