Governmental Services

This division helps faculty and staff with official government documents and transactions. It works with various government departments to obtain visas, residence permits, driving licenses, car registration and more. It keeps abreast of all changes in government rules and regulations and ensures that accurate information is provided to the AUS community.

Visas and Residence Permits

The Public Relations Department handles the processing of the various types of visas required by members of the AUS community, including faculty and staff and their dependants. It also deals with visa transfers, cancellations and renewals.

Faculty and Staff

The Immigration Office within the Public Relations Department helps faculty and staff with immigration issues. For more information, send an e-mail to government_relations@aus.edu or call +(971) 6 515 2079, or visit the Public Relations Department, located on the mezzanine floor of the Main Building (MM19D).

Entry Permit for Employment: This is the initial permit that allows AUS employees to enter the country and work.

Residence Sticker: This visa is issued after the Entry Permit for employment (for AUS employees) or the visit visa (for faculty and staff dependents). The residency visa is affixed in the passport and indicates that a person is officially and legally living in the UAE.

Maid Employment Visas: Upon approval of Public Relations Director Mr. Saeed Al-Shamsi, the Public Relations Department can help faculty and staff obtain visas for their maids. An AED 500 fee will be charged.

Student visas are processed through the International Student Services Office.

Visitors

The Public Relations Department helps obtain visas for official visitors upon request, and after approval of PR Director, more than 30 nationalities may acquire visas upon arrival at the airport. Check with the Public Relations Department, located on the mezzanine floor of the Main Building (MM19D), send an e-mail to government_relations@aus.edu or call extension 2079 for details.

For official visitors, the dean or department head must submit to the Public Relations Department an official letter stating the reason for the visit. He or she must also submit a visa application form, a copy of the visitor’s passport, two color passport-size photographs, and arrival and departure information.

 

Two types of visas are available:

  • Visit visas are permits to enter the country. Visit Visa requirements, for 30 days, and for 90 days.
  • Transit visits are temporary entry permits for official visitors only. They are valid for 14 days from the date of issue and for another 14 days from date of entry. The transit visa is used only for those arriving through airports. Requirements.

Marhaba Welcoming Service
The Public Relations Department can arrange for members of the AUS community to use the Marhaba Service, a welcoming and departure service provided by the Dubai International Airport, for a corporate rate of AED 70 per person for the normal service or an AED 135 for the Diamond Service. Members of the AUS community may also use this service for visiting relatives or friends.

Driving Licenses

To obtain a driving license, students, faculty, staff and dependents must visit the Sharjah Police Department’s Office located within Public Relations Department on the mezzanine floor of the Main Building.

Regulations for obtaining a license vary by nationality. See the policeman for details. Applicants must complete a form, which may be acquired from the policeman or the Public Relations Department. The form must be completed in Arabic and must be verified by the University Health Center.

Official Letters

The Public Relations Department issues official letters that might be required by various government and/or private organizations. These include:

  • Letters required for a medical checkup.
  • Letters required by the traffic department for the issuance, exchange, and/or renewal of driving licenses, as well as no-objection letters for faculty and staff family members to apply for the above.
  • Letters required for medical and governmental institutes for field trips as well as for training purposes for students, faculty and staff. (These are given based on a letter from the student’s advisor)
  • Airport entry permit letters
  • Salary certificates (issued to process immigration applications only)
  • File opening letters for Al Qassimi hospital
  • Entry request letters for those staying more than six months outside the UAE
  • School admission letters for the children of faculty and staff
  • "To whom it may concern letters" verifying employment for immigration, etc. (non-finance related letters only; for finance-related letters, see Human Resources)
  • General letters
