Rania A. Al-Mashat
Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat has over 20 years of international experience in central banking, financial systems and monetary policy frameworks. She has been a pivotal figure in driving sustainable development, climate action and gender equality through international cooperation and partnerships. Dr. Al-Mashat currently serves as the Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation in Egypt. She served as Egypt's Minister of International Cooperation (2019-2024) and the first female Minister of Tourism (2018-2019).
Before her ministerial roles, Dr. Al-Mashat was the Sub-Governor for Monetary Policy at the Central Bank of Egypt (2005-2016), where she played a key role in modernizing the bank's monetary policy strategy. Her experience also includes working as Advisor to the Chief Economist and Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C. She also served as the Sub-Governor for Monetary Policy at the Central Bank of Egypt (2005-2016), where she contributed to modernizing the bank’s monetary policy strategy, underpinned by structural reforms to formally adopt an inflation-targeting regime, a key pillar of the banking sector reform program launched in 2004. Her expertise spans development systems, structural reforms and climate finance, focusing on leveraging international partnerships to support Egypt's green transition.
Dr. Al-Mashat is a board member and advisory member of several international financial and development institutions, including the World Bank Group, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Islamic Development Bank. She has authored numerous publications on monetary policy, financial stability and climate finance. She has been recognized with several awards, including the Most Visionary and Outstanding Minister of International Cooperation in Africa Award by George Washington University and the Global Champion Award from the World Tourism and Travel Council.
Dr. Al-Mashat holds a PhD and MA in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA, and a BA in Economics from the American University in Cairo. She has also completed executive education programs in Leadership and Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and Transformational Leadership from Oxford University's Saïd Business School.
