Senior Applications Specialist - Banner | ICT & IT Security
The Senior Application Specialist for Banner ERP will be a key member of the IT-Enterprise Applications team, responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of the Banner ERP system. This role involves working closely with stakeholders across various departments to ensure that Banner supports the institution’s administrative, academic, and financial needs.
The Senior Application Specialist will also assist the AUS IT Applications team in converting existing Oracle Forms/Reports to Ellucian Experience Cards or Oracle APEX applications. Additionally, the role includes managing and supporting the Banner ERP environment, developing, and maintaining in-house business applications that extend the current Banner ERP environment based on user requirements, and managing third-party solutions (SaaS) implemented at AUS as assigned.
Job Responsibilities
System Administration & Support:
- Administer and maintain the Banner system, ensuring its continuous availability and optimal performance.
- Provide expert-level technical support for Banner applications, troubleshooting complex issues and resolving incidents.
- Monitor system performance, address issues, and implement changes or fixes as necessary.
- Perform regular updates and upgrades to Banner software, ensuring compatibility with other institutional systems.
- Manage ERP and other business applications under the Applications unit as assigned.
- Ensure business applications, DBA and database environments are operated in accordance with established security and support best practices.
- Manage ongoing operational and functional support for the designated business applications.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Customization & Configuration:
- Gather business requirements and collaborate with the development team to create functional designs that enhance the Banner ERP application and/or reports.
- Work with functional departments (e.g., Admissions, Registrar, HR, Finance) to configure and customize Banner to meet organizational needs.
- Develop and implement custom workflows, reports, and processes to improve efficiency and ensure accurate data management.
- Work with the development team to transform existing in-house administrative forms that use Oracle Forms/Reports technology to Ellucian Experience Cards or Oracle APEX applications.)
- Develop operating reports, drill-down dashboards, and analytics from various data sources.
Training & Documentation:
- Train and support users (staff, faculty, and administrators) on Banner functionality, new features, and system best practices.
- Create and maintain clear documentation for processes, procedures, and technical configurations.
- Provide user support, including resolving application-level questions, creating training materials, and ensuring proper usage.
- Prepare technical documentation, user manuals, and develop formal proposals for new systems or modifications to existing systems.
Data Integrity & Security:
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of data within the Banner system.
- Implement and maintain security protocols, managing user roles and access permissions according to institutional policies.
- Facilitate sharing of common data between databases and third-party products requiring integration.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with other IT professionals (e.g., database administrators, developers, network engineers) to ensure the seamless integration of Banner with other systems.
- Serve as a liaison between IT and business units to understand needs, develop solutions, and drive improvements.
Performance Optimization:
- Conduct performance analysis and recommend improvements for Banner’s functionality.
- Perform system tuning and optimize configurations to ensure smooth operations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems with business services, including software applications, databases, or server issues.
Project Management:
- Assist with Banner-related projects, such as upgrades, migrations, or new module implementations.
- Work with cross-functional teams to define project requirements, timelines, and resource allocation.
- Ensure projects are completed on time, within scope, and on budget.
Administrative:
- Provide updates to the relevant Manager.
- Coordinate with external and internal AUS entities, including faculty and administration.
- Ensure compliance and availability of team services.
Qualifications and Skills Required
- Bachelor’s degree in related field: Computer Science, Information Technology.
- 10-14 years or more of experience in Banner ERP application support and development.
- Strong English communication, presentation, and collaboration skills.
- Experience in troubleshooting within the Banner environment (Banner 8 & 9, SSB pages, Ellucian Ethos, Banner Experience Cards).
- Strong knowledge of Banner’s modules (e.g., Student, Finance, HR/Payroll).
- Experience with Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, or other scripting languages for database queries and reporting.
- Experience with Microsoft Power BI and Evisions Argos Reporting Tool
- Strong knowledge of JavaScript, React JS, Pro*C, and Groovy/Grails.
- Expertise in Oracle Forms, Reports, and APEX for forms/reports development and conversion.
- Familiarity with Higher Education Academic/Registrar business processes.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Master’s degree in computer engineering, Computer Science, MIS, or similar discipline
- Professional certification in user experience-related technology or a related field.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically to find solutions.
- Experience with Agile methodologies and collaboration in a fast-paced, iterative environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present and justify decisions to stakeholders.
- Ability to manage and prioritize workload to deliver high-quality work, enhancements, and process improvements on time with minimal direction.
- Ability to manage multiple work assignments simultaneously with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Objective-driven, flexible, decisive, and focused on meeting the needs of AUS.
- Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and customer service skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical users.
- ITIL, PMP, Scrum, or other project management certifications.
