I'm graduating with a...Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Design.
My AUS experience in one word: Growth
My favorite spot on campus is…my studio.
My best memory at AUS is…building meaningful relationships with peers, professors and other members of the campus community is the most valuable and lasting aspect. The knowledge and skills gained from academic coursework and other experiences has also shaped my personal and professional journey.
Looking back at my first year at AUS… My first year as a design student was particularly interesting because it was split between being on campus and then suddenly shifting online during my second semester. Despite the challenges, the experience was highly memorable. I recall the sleepless nights spent trying to figure out what it means to be a designer and how to handle the challenges of new software. The learning curve was definitely steep, especially without the physical presence of my professors. This added an extra layer of independence, as I strove to learn and grow despite the obstacles. However, what stood out was the unwavering sense of community that persisted throughout. Despite the tough times, I never felt alone, thanks to the support of my peers and mentors.
Because I studied at AUS…I learned that progress is not a fixed endpoint or final result, but an ongoing and never-ending process. There will always be a constant struggle against obstacles, rather than a fixed goal or ideal that can be achieved. In other words, progress is not a destination but a journey of personal growth and development.
After graduation…I am considering two potential paths: becoming an independent artist or pursuing academia. As an independent artist, I am fascinated by the idea of creating unique and meaningful work and sharing it with the world, but I understand that it requires a lot of dedication and a willingness to take risks. Pursuing academia also interests me, as it offers the opportunity to explore new ideas, push the boundaries of my field, and share my knowledge with others. Both paths have their unique challenges and opportunities, but I am confident that I have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in either one.
I'm graduating with a...Bachelor of Science in Physics.
My AUS experience in one word: Transformative
My favorite spot on campus is…the library; it’s a place where I can study at my own pace. Its ambiance, especially in the quiet zone, is perfect for focusing on tasks and achieving maximum productivity.
My best memory at AUS is…the completion of the first academic year with a high cumulative GPA, which granted me the privilege of becoming a founding member of the first international chapter of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
My favorite moment from our Silver Jubilee celebrations was...being invited to the AUS Alumni Silver Jubilee reunion and watching the fireworks display.
Looking back at my first year at AUS…I am amazed at how much I have grown, both academically and personally, and grateful for the opportunities that AUS has provided me. I faced numerous challenges along the way, however, each one provided a chance for me to prove myself and I now have matured into a dedicated and self-motivated individual.
Because I studied at AUS…I have gained invaluable knowledge and honed my analytical and mathematical skills. I have also mustered the confidence and critical thinking abilities imperative to tackling complex problems.
After graduation…I'm excited to see where my education and skills will take me and am open to new possibilities and opportunities.
I'm graduating with a....Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a second major in Mathematics.
My AUS experience in one word: Opportunistic
My favorite spot on campus is…ESB! With all my friends, classes and research labs!
My best memory at AUS is…..too difficult to summarize. From meeting lifelong friends, to being able to contribute to research in the field of machine learning, to having fun with so many clubs at AUS, I truly enjoyed my experience!
Looking back at my first year at AUS…I think I have grown a lot, in terms of personal growth, knowledge and leadership skills.
Because I studied at AUS…I got several research opportunities and job opportunities, was able to participate and win plenty of competitions, and met amazing and talented people that I’m proud to call my friends!
After graduation…I plan to work as a data scientist in industry for a year to gain some experience before pursuing my master's in computer science abroad.
I'm graduating with...a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Finance) with a second major in Economics.
My AUS experience in one word: Transformative
My favorite spot on campus is…the office of my SBA student organization, the Dean’s Business Team.
My best memory of AUS is…dancing at Global Day as the President of the Indian Cultural Club. The way I felt hearing the cheers of the audience before and after our performance is honestly something I’ll never forget.
Looking back at my first year at AUS…The person I was is almost unrecognizable. The experiences and opportunities I have had at AUS have shaped me into a capable individual, and I’m so grateful. Although, I do miss how carefree I was as a freshman.
Because I studied at AUS…I am confident in my ability to thrive in high-pressure situations.
After graduation...I will feel a mix of emotions, ranging from excitement about the future to a sense of loss for having to say goodbye to the familiar routine and the people of college life. My plan upon graduation is to focus on my career and continue my education in the future.
The Spring 2023 Commencement speech, titled AUS:Home, was written and delivered by Sarah Jamjoom, who graduated with Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in Finance.

As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, and a very good morning to Your Excellency Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, President of our university; honorable members of the Board of Trustees; Chancellor Dr. Susan Mumm; Provost Dr. Mohamed El Tarhuni, distinguished guests, faculty, and staff; our proud families; and, of course, my fellow graduates.
We stand here today, proud and honored to be named the Class of 2023.
As first year students, all of us felt excitement intermingled with anxiety and adrenaline as we entered the university. None of us knew what to expect and were experiencing intense feelings of enthusiasm while looking forward to what is to come. All of us wanted to be successful and yet at that moment, we had no idea what the future held. Some of us drove 30 minutes from home while others flew thousands of miles, but we all came together to build a new home at the American University of Sharjah.
As a good parent would, the administration at AUS, worked diligently to make this university home for us. We had welcome week and the club fair to give us a glimpse of every possible organization that we could contribute and belong to. Our professors started with icebreakers to welcome and get to know us. Buildings were adorned with huge banners so that we would not get lost, and our advisors kept their doors wide open, ready to fix our schedules after completing registration with merely 2 courses.
Slowly, the beautiful palm trees that surrounded our campus, the loud boisterous library nights, the circling crows greeting us after a long night of studying, and the security staff waving good morning at the gates of the campus made us feel like we were at home. We found a father figure to this home. His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi: a selfless father figure, a president with a clear vision, one that shaped our minds, allowing us to aim higher, think more compassionately and live in harmony, grounding us to our core. 25 years later, a sister figure joined to take on the presidency, showing us what it means to lead young. Her excellency Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi is a role model for every pioneering Arab woman. She is an inspiration to every young person sitting in this hall today.
Just as our family homes provided us with a sense of comfort and security, as well as a place of growth and exploration, AUS provided us with a sense of community and belonging. We found friends, we found brothers and sisters, and we found family; a family that supported us, challenged us, and helped us fulfill our highest potential. The same way we outgrew our childhood homes and moved on to the next stages of life by coming to AUS, my fellow graduates, we must now move on to new challenges and new opportunities that await us as graduates.
To those of us who decided to pursue the academic challenge of higher studies, to others who have already secured exciting new jobs and to those still deciding their next move while grasping the idea that we are graduating and are just about to take an adventurous step together into the outer world: I leave you with this: We are hope for the future.
We will go on to become the leaders of tomorrow. Now I cannot guarantee that this path will be easy. We will face challenges. The job market is currently highly competitive and adjusting to a non-academic culture and environment may not be easy. Our majors do not necessarily dictate our career paths and determining where we truly belong will be difficult. Nonetheless, we will leave this hall equipped to face what is out there.
I like to think of challenges as slingshots: no matter what situation you find yourself in, a challenge is not a setback but rather a setup, which will provide you with the power to propel forward and collect energy to achieve your challenging goals. It is time to build our new homes. Let us have the right mindset and attitude to apply the principles that AUS has instilled in us.
We will adapt and grow out in the real world just as we learned to adapt to the diverse social settings and the rigorous academic environment at AUS. Let us network and socialize. Let us push beyond our comfort zones and leave our marks wherever we step. Let us recognize our talents, nurture them, and build on them. As Sheikha Bodour once said, “We all have gifts and talents to bring to the world, so let them shine.”
We will leave here today forever thankful for the memories. These cherished memories of having our morning coffee, leaving classes to enjoy the rain, socializing in the student center, and having our long walks from building to building or scootering right through.
We cannot leave here today without thanking and giving our sincere appreciation to those who made this all possible.
Thank you to all who made a home for us: administration, staff, faculty, fellow students, and us.
Thank you, Mama and Baba, our parents, and families, for believing in us, supporting us, caring for us, and loving us unconditionally.
Thank you to our dear professors for pushing us beyond our limits. A final thanks to the university that united us,
دمتي جامعتي في قلبي حيةً وستظلين دائماً مسكني الثاني
AUS, you will always remain in our hearts and will always be our second home.
