Message from the President

Congratulations to the Class of Spring 2024!

Heal. Build. Unite.

As you close this important chapter of your academic journey, I want to celebrate with you this milestone that marks not only the end of your studies, but also the beginning of new opportunities. Today represents a pivotal transition—a moment when the anticipation of what lies ahead of you meets the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

During your time at American University of Sharjah, you have grown tremendously and blossomed while facing challenges. Our beloved emirate of Sharjah, renowned for its culture, family values and community spirit, provided the backdrop for your academic and personal development. These values are now an integral part of who you are.

When you go out into the world, you carry more than just a degree from AUS. You carry the responsibility of being an ambassador for what Sharjah embodies. At a time when the fabric of a strong, cohesive society often seems to be under pressure, your role becomes even more important. You are the harbingers of change, the architects of bridges in a fragmented world.

Let this responsibility inspire you. Accept it as a call to action—get involved, participate and lead with the integrity and courage you have honed here at AUS. Distinguish yourself as leaders who heal, who build and who unite.

I am immensely proud of each of you. As you continue on your path, remember that you are not walking alone. You are part of a larger AUS family, a network that spans the globe and supports its members. Congratulations again, Class of Spring 2024.

Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi
President of AUS

Message from the Chancellor

On behalf of American University of Sharjah, I extend my congratulations to the graduating class of Spring 2024.

To all our students who become alumni on this occasion, I wish you continued success and thank you for all the contributions you have made to AUS during your time with us. You are joining a distinguished and growing community of American University of Sharjah graduates who shine in their personal and professional accomplishments, and we look forward to maintaining and growing our relationship with you in the years to come.

Commencement provides an opportunity to reflect on how parents, family members, professors, former teachers and friends have supported you during your education. The support and encouragement that you have received from your parents and family deserve special recognition, and American University of Sharjah recognizes their contributions to your education.

Once again, congratulations on your remarkable achievement. I am proud to celebrate your achievement with you and your family and friends today.

I wish you the very best for the future.

Dr. Tod Laursen
Chancellor

Meet our Spring 2024 College Ambassadors

Bettina Rodricks | College of Architecture, Art and Design

Major: Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication

Can you take us back to your first day at AUS? What’s one thing that was going through your mind at the time?
I was a part of the batch that started university during COVID-19, so my first day on campus was when I was a sophomore. I was really excited to see all the people I’d met online in person.

Who has been your biggest source of support throughout your university experience?
Other than the friendships I developed at AUS, my biggest source of support has been my professors.

How would you describe your AUS experience in one word: Wholesome

Was there a particular moment when it hit you that you were graduating this semester? How did it feel?
Every time an annual event, like Global Day, for example, would take place, I would always be reminded that this would be the last one. This semester, I truly understood what the word bittersweet meant. On one hand, I can't wait to graduate, but I also don't want to leave this place and all the memories I have attached to it.

|-BREAK-|

What will you miss the most about your university experience?
At CAAD, we have such a great community, and I will miss being around this community every day.

What's a tradition or event at university that holds special meaning for you?
This might be an odd response for CAAD students, because most of us dread this day, but I would say final review day. Now that I am done with all my final reviews and will probably never have one again, I look back on them as a highlight. This is usually the time you get to see your entire project come to life, but everyone has also barely slept because of trying to get the project to its best potential, and that has made for some of my best memories.

What’s one thing (physical) that you’ll be taking with you to remind you of your time at AUS?
Being a part of a major that is print-based, over the years I have accumulated a collection of posters and books that have been designed by me and my friends. They always remind me of my time here.

What advice would you give to future students who will walk the same halls you did?
One thing that I always carried with me is my passion for what I was studying. It is a challenging course, and there will be a lot of ups and downs, but if you enjoy what you are doing and always remain passionate about it, you will enjoy the process.

Abdelhamid Khodja | College of Arts and Sciences

Major:  Bachelor of Science in Biology

Can you take us back to your first day at AUS? What’s one thing that was going through your mind at the time?
Like most of the graduating class, I started my journey online amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic! This unfamiliarity and uncertainty associated with having the orientation week online was definitely a challenge— especially since I lived outside of the UAE. But in my mind, at that moment, I felt a sense of tranquility knowing that I wasn't the only one going through this.

Who has been your biggest source of support throughout your university experience?
My mother and father and my two younger siblings. They have been the pillars of strength and constant source of motivation, accompanying me through both my triumphs and challenges.

How would you describe your AUS experience in one word: Remarkable

Was there a particular moment when it hit you that you were graduating this semester? How did it feel?
It was a Thursday night and I was sitting in the Chemistry Building with a close friend, and it hit both of us that we were both graduating this semester. So, being the sane students we were, we created a calendar that tracked each passing day so that we were reminded to make the most of the limited time we had left!

|-BREAK-|

What will you miss the most about your university experience?
The long sleepless nights in the Chemistry Building and the friendships I've made along the way. I really am lucky to have the friends that I have now and I cherish the memories we've made together! I'm also going to miss the office hours I've had with my professors. I spent more time in office hours with my mentors learning about life lessons then I did about the course!

What's a tradition or event at university that holds special meaning for you?
For the past two and half years, my friends and I have made a concerted effort to attend every free food event on campus. We operate under the guise of the ghost organization called Institute for Gastronomic Standard Assessment (IGSA). We even have an exclusive WhatsApp group with only eight people that get a schedule of all the free food events on campus for the coming weeks/month. I've gone weeks without spending a single dirham on food!

What’s one thing (physical) that you’ll be taking with you to remind you of your time at AUS?
For me, the one physical thing that holds tremendous value in my heart is my Seiko wrist watch. I absolutely love watches, and it was the first automatic watch I bought with the money I made from being a student employee at AUS! Every time I put it on, I'm reminded of my hard work and it always puts a smile on my face.

What advice would you give to future students who will walk the same halls you did?The next four years will define you. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Go out there and be an active member of your department and get to know your professors on a personal level. Your professors are your mentors, you'll learn a whole lot more about life from them then any course you take. Take small, focused and purposeful steps to advancing yourself. Don't stress yourself out by joining every club on campus— join only those that matter to you, and where you can make a significant change. At the end of your time at AUS, you want to be remembered for something impactful and positive! Also, don't worry about hyper-optimizing your life. We're humans after all, so if your friends are going out on Wednesday night, just go ahead and join them! Stay persistent, be curious, and always believe in the power of each and every single one of your ideas. Because if we don’t innovate, someone else will.

Shahd Mahmoud | College of Engineering

Major: Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering

Can you take us back to your first day at AUS? What’s one thing that was going through your mind at the time?
Having started AUS during a global pandemic, all that was going through my mind was whether I would actually get to experience life on campus or not. At the start, I felt like I was in the wrong major, but I kept an open mind and made the decision to change my major from biology to industrial engineering after my first semester, and I am beyond proud of the outcomes and impact that this decision has had on my life. This is why the concept of the butterfly effect is so close to my heart, having experienced it first hand. I always wonder how my university years would’ve been had I stayed in my initial major.

Who has been your biggest source of support throughout your university experience?
Aside from my parents and sister, who continue to pave the way for my success through their sacrifices and support, my professors, department head Dr. Abdulrahim Shamayleh and CEN Dean Dr. Fadi Aloul have trusted me with responsibilities that helped me excel in various aspects and sharpen my leadership skills through honorable roles such as my  Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers presidency.

How would you describe your AUS experience in one word: Diversely-rewarding

|-BREAK-|

Was there a particular moment when it hit you that you were graduating this semester? How did it feel?
Thinking about an answer to this question is definitely making the fact that I’m graduating real, but I also thought about it during our CEN Senior Design Competition ceremony. I felt both proud of our group winning first place, yet upset because I knew I will miss the life I’ve had during these four years and the great minds I’ve met during them. Nevertheless, I am eager for what is to come next in my life, with more responsibilities and less certainties.

What will you miss the most about your university experience?
I will miss the predictability of university life, how there is a structure that repeats every year, times of fun and events, and times of stress and exams—coupled with the ease with which I get to connect with my friends and professors at any point in the day. Most prominently, however, I will miss all the competitions we get to participate in, such as senior design, and international Model United Nations conferences in New York and Qatar.

What's a tradition or event at university that holds special meaning for you?
Our annual Industrial Engineering (INE) Social Night and the AUS Model United Nations conference. For two years, I served as this prestigious conference’s Deputy Secretary General. I am grateful for the valuable skill set and opportunities this experience has provided me. Interestingly, this conference is the reason I joined AUS to begin with, as I used to attend as a delegate in high school, and I was captivated by the mesmerizing architecture of the campus, aiming to end up as an AUS student one day.

What’s one thing (physical) that you’ll be taking with you to remind you of your time at AUS?
My AUS Model United Nations Deputy Secretary General badge

What advice would you give to future students who will walk the same halls you did?
Mindset is key. Develop a growth mindset and exercise it in a way that makes your growth journey one that continuously improves you. Seize every opportunity, and be open to connecting with others because you never know what doors would open from single, seemingly small, decisions. Learn from both your setbacks and your achievements, and fixate on having a well-rounded and holistic experience here at AUS. The opportunities and resources will always present themselves—you just have to make the conscious effort to reap them.

Rishi Chugh | School of Business Administration

Major: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration—Management Information Systems

Can you take us back to your first day at AUS? What’s one thing that was going through your mind at the time?
My first day was a mix of sadness and excitement because it was online. I was part of the "COVID batch" that started university online. However, AUS didn't fail to deliver with the orientation and made sure to maintain exceptional events that allowed the process of online learning to be made seamless.

Who has been your biggest source of support throughout your university experience?
I am grateful to have a number of support systems and all of them have helped me at different times. However, my biggest source of support would definitely be my family. Having them by my side since the start and supporting me in pursuing extracurriculars even if that meant reaching home late is something I am very grateful for.

How would you describe your AUS experience in one word: Enriching

Was there a particular moment when it hit you that you were graduating this semester? How did it feel?
The moment that it hit me that I was graduating was when I saw my juniors worrying about registration and getting their courses. I realized that I didn’t have to worry about that anymore, and it was a mixed feeling of nerves and emotions.

|-BREAK-|

What will you miss the most about your university experience?
I'll miss the spontaneous plans at Karak Street and catching up with friends in the break between classes.

What's a tradition or event at AUS that holds special meaning for you?
Global Day is one of the biggest events held every year at AUS, and I have fortunately performed with the Indian Cultural Club for three years. The entire experience and process is a joyful one, and it has helped me make a lot of memories and friends.

What’s one thing (physical) that you’ll be taking with you to remind you of your time at AUS?
The one thing I will be taking with me will be my medal, which I received from being placed on the Chancellor's List. This medal holds special meaning to me as it is a symbol of my hard work and dedication to my academics.

What advice would you give to future students who will walk the same halls you did?
My advice would be to never miss out on any opportunities that are provided by AUS, whether in terms of extracurricular activities, on-campus jobs, networking or prestigious competitions. AUS can open a lot of doors for any student as long as you are dedicated and passionate towards building yourself. I also advise students to always talk to their professors, whether about the course or advice about your career aspirations or your life in general.

Commencement Speakers

The Spring 2024 Commencement speeches were written and delivered by Malek Bachir, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Abdelhamid Khodja, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.

Glory in the Struggle | Malek Bachir

 Bismillah Al Rahman Al Rahim.

Your Excellency Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qassimi, honorable members of the Board of Trustees, Chancellor Tod Laursen, Interim Provost Mohamed El Tarhuni, faculty and staff, our proud families, and of course, my fellow graduates: Assalamualaykom wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

My name is Malek Bachir, and it is both emotional and exciting for me to address you here today. I want to thank everyone for being here, to proudly witness the graduation of the American University of Sharjah's 48th batch, the class of Spring 2024!

My fellow graduates, we are here today in a hall that is overflowing with emotions as we celebrate not the end, but the beginning of our journey. We graduate today as living testaments to resilience and unbreakable spirit, having gone through a college journey that was anything but conventional. We went through what began as a minor adjustment during our last school year, that week we took off in March 2020, which quickly spiraled out of control. That week turned into months, which led to starting and spending our first year of college online, in the most unconventional way imaginable.

As we embarked on two new paths, college life and virtual learning, each of us grappled with our own set of challenges. The familiar rhythm of classroom life was replaced with Blackboard Collaborate, where the only interactions we had with each other was typing “present” and “yes”. Our bedrooms and kitchen tables turned into classrooms, blurring the lines between personal space and learning environments.

This struggle was real, and it faced us on multiple fronts, but ladies and gentlemen, instead of lamenting our struggle, let’s instead appreciate what came out of it, let us talk about the glory in our struggle. It's in these struggles, these moments of uncertainty and challenge, that we found our true strengths. We learned that adaptability is not just about surviving; it's about thriving. We discovered the power of community in times of isolation. We found new ways to connect by creating virtual study groups that spanned neighborhoods, cities, and even continents, and by sharing resources and encouragement, passing along tips as freely as we once swapped notes in the hallways. These experiences showed the strength of our principles in the face of hardship, and our unwavering strength when faced with obstacles.

The glory in our struggle lies in the transformation we've undergone. We didn't just learn to adapt; we became masters of reinvention. We didn't just overcome obstacles; we transformed them into opportunities for growth. Our journey has taught us that within every challenge lies an opportunity to grow, to learn, and to excel.

Despite the physical distance, we came together, supported one another, and pushed the boundaries of what we thought possible. And once we came back on campus, this graduating class led initiatives that not only brought us even closer but also made a significant impact on our community. From volunteering at the world's biggest climate change conference COP 28, to great initiatives led by our clubs and organizations, we turned our challenges into opportunities to serve and lead.

The most significant example of these initiatives happened a few months ago, when the AUS community led by the Student Council put on a united front and organized the "Tarahum for Gaza" event, where we all came together to support a people in need. This shows how the AUS community is and always will be dedicated to making change on unprecedented levels.

And of course, we must acknowledge the profound role that AUS has played throughout our challenges. We are immensely grateful for our leaders, especially his highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, ruler of Sharjah, the founder and first President of AUS. As many of our families went through financial struggles during the COVID pandemic, generous contributions and scholarships facilitated the academic and financial lives of many graduates here, including myself. In the same spirit of visionary leadership and commitment to education, we are now fortunate to have his daughter, Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi leading the way as the current President of AUS, carrying on her father’s legacy.

And to our parents, guardians, siblings, and loved ones, your belief in us has been our guiding light. And to our professors, mentors, and the entire faculty, your dedication to guiding us through these tough times did not go unnoticed, your support carried us through the toughest times, and on behalf of all graduates, thank you for being there for us.

Today we also remember those who, though may not be here with us physically, they left a lasting impression on our lives. Personally, I graduate today without my dad, whom I navigated most of my university life without after losing him to COVID in my first year. My father’s spirit and legacy inspired and will continue to inspire me for the rest of my life and I am eternally grateful for him. This sentiment, I know, is shared by many of us who have lost loved ones and are feeling their loss especially today. Together, we honor their memory, and carry their legacy forward with every step we take. They dreamt with us, believed in us, and today, their spirits soar with pride at what we have achieved, and we owe them a debt of gratitude that we can only repay by living lives that will make them proud.

So, to the class of Spring 2024, as we stand on the threshold of a new beginning, let's embrace the glory of our shared struggle, let its memory be the foundation upon which we build our future successes. Let it inspire us to approach the future not with fear, but with the confidence that comes from knowing we've already been victorious over tougher times. And finally, my fellow graduates, I ask you to leave this hall today with one thing in mind; that obstacles are not in the way; they are the way.

Congratulations, Alf Mabrouk, and thank you.

"Don’t Wait for The Right Opportunity, Create it" | Abdelhamid Khodja

Bismillah Alhamdulliah wa salatu wa salamu Ala rasool lillah, As Salamu Alakium Wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

Good morning Your Excellency Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, President of our university; esteemed members of the Board of Trustees; our Chancellor Dr. Tod Laursen; Interim Provost Mohamed Tarhuni; dedicated faculty and staff; our beloved families; distinguished guests; and of course, my fellow graduates, Class of Spring 2024.

Today marks the culmination of our journey at the American University of Sharjah.

While we should be proud for our accomplishments, we should also be grateful to those who have helped us greatly along the way.

Think of everyone who has made this momentous day possible. To take a phrase from Newton, think of those giants in our lives, the giants whose shoulders we stand upon.

To our beloved parents, we extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and unconditional love throughout our academic journeys. Thank you for your continued faith in our abilities. Thank you for sacrificing your dreams so that we could make ours a reality. You have instilled in us the values of perseverance, integrity, and compassion – shaping us into the individuals we are today.

To our esteemed professors, we express our heartfelt appreciation for your dedication and mentorship. Beyond imparting knowledge, you have challenged us to think critically and pursue intellectual curiosity. Your belief in us has not only inspired us to surpass our limits but has given us the confidence to tackle the complexities of the world outside the classroom.

And, most importantly, thank you to Your Excellency Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi and the university administration, for providing us with a world-class education and a nurturing platform to thrive. Your remarkable leadership has empowered us to realize our ambitions.

For us, the Class of Spring 2024, “thriving” took on a whole new definition. We started this journey amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, when we were all behind computer screens with our lives disrupted. We were forced to bridge physical distances through virtual connections. Inside the “smart classrooms” we could not see into the eyes of our professors and peers, we could not meet in the student center, or in the library. For us this was a strange change. But remember that in 1665 Sir Isaac Newton was sent home from Cambridge because the black plague was sweeping through England. Newton of course had no option to continue online, so instead he casually invented calculus. For us each day tested our resilience as we dealt with the unfamiliar: masks, temperature checks, weekly PCRs, and the unfamiliarity of logging into iLearn, unsure of what awaited us on the other side. With time, terms like "breakout groups" became the norm. And the once familiar feeling of a classroom faded, becoming replaced by laptop screens and unstable internet connection.

In this new online world, the role of the professor and that of the student was redefined. Professors had to tirelessly adapt their teaching methods to keep us engaged. Meanwhile, we, the students, navigated the complexities of online learning, juggling responsibilities and distractions in the form of YouTube videos and Netflix shows in other tabs!

Despite our tricks, we were able to pass our courses. Despite the obstacles we faced, with the odds seemingly stacked against us, we remained steadfast in our pursuit of knowledge and growth. History will write about how in the face of extreme uncertainty, our perseverance and resilience brought us to where we are now. And here we are today, ready to embark on the next chapter of our lives with courage and optimism.

Reflecting on our time at AUS, we cherish the memories that have become integral to our university experience. From the late-night Mini Mart runs, only to realize that the Mini Mart closed at 7.00 PM, to the falling asleep in the library before our exam the next morning, and the thrill of scavenging for free food events on campus - these moments now feel like distant memories, yet they remain etched in our hearts. AUS has given us more than a world class education. It is home to these memories and experiences that have shaped us.

But our journey was not only defined by the challenges of a global pandemic; it was also shaped by the transformative power of artificial intelligence. We have witnessed firsthand the profound impact of AI on our education and daily lives. Yet, amidst the uncertainty and disruption, we have embraced innovation and creativity. As we prepare to enter the job market, we are confronted with an evolving landscape where AI is reshaping every industry. Moving forward, we Abdelhamid Khodja 88350 (Biology major) 3 should play a role in shaping the development of AI technologies and ensuring the ethical use of AI in our society.

As graduates equipped with the knowledge that we have today we have a renewed sense of responsibility to enter the world and strive to make it a better place than we found it. I am reminded of a powerful saying by the great writer George Bernard Shaw: "Don't wait for the right opportunity, create it." And in a world brimming with challenges and uncertainties, this principle has never been more relevant. Our society is facing pressing issues such as climate change, social injustice, public health crises, and the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence.

In closing, my fellow graduates, I urge you to heed the call to action embedded within todays theme: Wait not for opportunities, create them. Because the problems we face today require all of us to collaborate to find creative solutions.

So, as we embark on this next chapter of our lives, let us be catalysts for change, architects of societal progress, and champions of justice. Each and every single one of you possesses the power to shape the world in accordance with our shared values and aspirations. So let us seize this moment with courage and compassion, knowing that our actions today will echo far into the future.

Congratulations, Class of Spring 2024, on this momentous achievement.

May your journey ahead be filled with purpose, resilience, and boundless opportunities. Thank you very much.
