Former Self | Marimba Performance (April 2025)
"Former Self" is a 75-minute solo marimba piece that features eight original compositions and a series of notes from the artist Maria Finkelmeier to her former selves, ranging from cautionary tales to stories of resilience. "Former Self" utilizes video projection featuring generative animations controlled by the artist's movements onstage, co-designed and coded by Supreetha Krishnan. Krishnan’s work explores how extended reality interactions can enhance audience participation and community building. Her most recent project with the MIT Climate Machine used extended reality practices to bring awareness to environmental change.
About the artist
Maria Finkelmeier, Interim Chair of Music Business at Berklee College in Boston, combines her extensive training in contemporary percussion and marimba performance with electronic dance music, singing and improvisation to create a playful and distinctive storytelling experience. As founder of MF Dynamics, a multidisciplinary studio creating large-scale performative art works in public spaces, Finkelmeier has transformed Fenway Park’s iconic Green Monster, the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University, and Cincinnati’s Roebling Bridge, among many others. As a musician, Finkelmeier has performed with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silkroad Ensemble, The Knights and The Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and is a Yamaha performing artist.
