Islam in the Modern World: Dialogues on Faith, Culture and Society (April 2025)
Organized by the Department of Arabic and Translation Studies, this conference will bring together academics, researchers and practitioners to contribute to a vibrant exchange of ideas.The conference will provide a great opportunity for participants to engage with a wide range of topics, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and encouraging innovative approaches to understanding Islam. By examining the dynamic interplay between traditional Islamic knowledge and contemporary scholarly approaches, the evolving challenges and opportunities in the field shall be addressed. This will include exploring how Islamic thought can contribute to modern debates on ethics, law, education, politics, economics, and more.
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Mustapha Sheikh, Associate Professor of Islamic Thought and Muslim Societies, School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of Leeds
Dr. Mustapha Sheikh is Co-Director of the Iqbal Centre for Critical Muslim Studies, which is committed to decolonizing the study of Muslims and Islam and to building links between the university and the wider public; and he serves as co-chair of the university's Muslim Staff Network. Dr. Sheikh’s areas of expertise include Ottoman history, Islamic law and legal theory, critical Muslim studies, Islamophobia and Muslim intellectual history. He has published widely in these areas, and is currently working on a co-edited book on trauma and healing from an Islamic psycho-spiritual perspective.
