Sharjah: An Urban Retrospective (April 2016)
Sharjah, whose population has crossed one million with a GDP equal to the US state of Vermont ($24 billion), is considered to be one of the urban centers not only of the UAE, but of the region, and has started to re-position itself after a period of relative inertia. The city today is recognized for its unique architectural style as well as its arts and culture. In his talk, Sultan Al Qassemi will discuss the changing urban landscape of Sharjah, from coastal settlements in the late 19th century to major development projects in the early 21st century.
About the Speaker
Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi is a United Arab Emirates-based columnist and the founder of the Barjeel Art Foundation, an independent initiative established to contribute to the intellectual development of the art scene in the Arab region by building a prominent and publicly accessible art collection in the United Arab Emirates.
