American University of Sharjah hosts over 200 scholars for the fourth International Conference on Mathematics and Statistics
The Fourth International Conference on Mathematics and Statistics (ICMS25), hosted by American University of Sharjah’s (AUS) College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) from February 20–22, 2025, recently brought together leading scholars and researchers from around the world to explore the latest advancements in pure and applied mathematics, statistics and mathematics education. This year’s conference gathered more than 200 scholars and researchers and was held in partnership with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), two of the world’s most prestigious organizations in the field of mathematics and statistics, respectively.
"The International Conference on Mathematics and Statistics has continued to grow in impact over the years. This year’s event reaffirmed the vital role of mathematics and statistics in solving both research and real-world challenges. It also brought together distinguished mathematicians from around the globe, fostered meaningful discussions among leading scholars and sparked new collaborations. CAS is proud to support scholarly platforms like this, which enable experts at the forefront of their fields to come together and push the boundaries of mathematics and statistics research and education," said Dr. Mahmoud Anabtawi, Dean of CAS.
This year’s event included keynote addresses from distinguished mathematicians, such as Dr. Martin Bohner from Missouri University of Science and Technology in the United States, Dr. Kathryn Hess from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, and Dr. Edriss Titi from the University of Cambridge in the UK and Texas A&M University in the United States. Their talks provided valuable insights into topics ranging from different equations and topological methods in neuroscience to rigorous analytical techniques in fluid dynamics.
“We are delighted to see how the International Conference on Mathematics and Statistics has grown since its launch in 2010. As the first high-level international platform of its kind in Sharjah and the UAE, ICMS has played an important role in advancing innovative research in mathematics and statistics in the region. Over the years, it has helped position AUS as a hub for mathematical and statistical research while also elevating the visibility of these fields across the Gulf and the Middle East. This year’s conference was no exception, with a wider range of topics and scholars than ever before. We look forward to bringing together leading scholars to continue building this important platform for many years,” said Dr. Abdul Salam Jarrah, chair of the conference and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at AUS.
ICMS25’s sessions also covered a wide range of topics in pure and applied mathematics, with discussions focusing on algebra, coding theory, data mining, machine learning, differential equations, mathematical biology and topology. In addition to the keynote lectures, the conference program included 15 special and general sessions featuring discussions by a diverse group of mathematicians and statisticians from around the world. These sessions covered various areas of mathematics, statistics, and their applications—from Algebraic Topology and Financial Mathematics to Data Science and Applied Analysis.
“It was a great pleasure and privilege to discover the beautiful AUS campus and to participate in the 4th ICMS, which brings together researchers with a remarkably broad spectrum of expertise in mathematics and statistics. This conference provides a welcome opportunity for networking among researchers from around the world,” said Dr. Hess from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
The College of Arts and Sciences at AUS offers a Bachelor’s in Mathematics, a Master’s in Mathematics and a PhD in Mathematics. AUS is ranked among the top three universities in the UAE (QS Rankings, 2025) and the top 550 globally in mathematics (QS Rankings, 2024). Its Department of Mathematics and Statistics, which is part of CAS, is known regionally and internationally for equipping students with essential quantitative and analytical skills to excel in academia, industry and research.
