AUS awards scholarships to athletic students
Student athletes at American University of Sharjah (AUS) who received the Athletic Scholarships for Fall 2012 were honored at a special ceremony held today, October 18. The awards were presented by AUS Chancellor, Dr. Peter Heath, in the presence of Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and other senior officials.
The Athletic Scholarships for Fall 2012 were awarded to Ahmed Ewida, Ameed AlHashash and
Marwan Thabet for soccer; Shady Waleed Gomaa and Rime Al Achkar for swimming; Shahzada Haris Attique and Shah Rukh Khan for cricket; Ahmed Al Madani, Khaled Ahmed Amer, Joanne Mattar and Munirah Alshami for volleyball; Abdulrahman Abdulsalam Habbab and Shaheen Salim Khoja for table tennis; Hasib Taj for badminton; and Rima Ziad Baghdan and Doha Assem Tantawy for basketball.
"Being involved in sports is a great aspect of university life. Teamwork is very important in the world today and this is a great investment that you are making in your own futures," said Dr. Heath.
The scholarships consist of a 50 percent tuition remission and are granted on a renewable semester basis. The scholarship program aims to support the student-athletes who have limited financial recourses and who demonstrate athletic excellence as well as outstanding sports qualities. It also aims to encourage, improve and develop sports at the university.
According to cricketer Shah Rukh Khan, "It is an honor to be acknowledged and awarded today and I feel proud to be a part of the AUS cricket team."
The scholarships are a gesture of the university's recognition to financially deserving student-athletes and underline the university's commitment toward promoting the role of athletics in higher education.
