AUS computing competition tests students in programming, AI and app/IoT development
Challenging more than 103 students from 18 schools across the UAE, the American University of Sharjah’s (AUS) sixth School Computing Competition became a vibrant arena for emerging tech talent.
Organized by the AUS Department of Computer Science and Engineering in collaboration with the Office of Enrollment Management - Sharakah Program, and sponsored by BEEAH Group, the competition challenged participants across three stimulating tracks.
In Track 1: Computer Programming, students solved intricate coding problems using languages like Python, Java or C++, . In a testament to their dedication, the team from Al Mawakeb Al Barsha secured the first-place position, followed closely by Al Dhafra Private School and Deira International School in second and third place, respectively.
Track 2: Python Programming for AI to tackle real-life machine learning tasks. The first-place accolade in this track was earned by Delhi Private School, with Sama American Private School and Australian International School securing second and third place, respectively.
Meanwhile, Track 3: Mobile App and/or IoT Applications challenged teams to develop innovative solutions for smart cities or explore the frontiers of AI and IoT. Delhi Private School once again clinched the first-place position, with Dubai National School and Manarat Al Sharjah Private School following closely in second and third place, respectively.
For Freddy Sudhakar, Grade 11 student from Delhi Private School Sharjah and a first-place winner in track 3, the competition was not merely a test of technical abilities but also a platform for personal growth and development.
"Participating in track 3 was a transformative journey, pushing me to expand my technical skills and cultivate essential soft skills such as communication and teamwork. This competition has been an opportunity for learning and personal development," he said.
“This competition provides young minds with invaluable opportunities to explore, learn and grow. By engaging in hands-on challenges and real-world problem-solving, students not only sharpen their technical skills but also cultivate creativity, critical thinking and teamwork—essential qualities for success in the ever-evolving field of technology," said Dr. Tamer Shanableh, Professor of Computer Science and a co-chair of the organizing committee.
“Congratulations to the talented participants and winners of the sixth edition of the School Computing Competition. BEEAH Group is proud to support this initiative by AUS, which encourages young students to translate their knowledge and education in computer science into practical applications through demonstration, which further enhances their skills and prepares them for high-impact careers in innovation and technology. We look forward to collaborating with AUS on future editions of the competition,” said Omar Al Zarouni, Associate Manager from the Innovation and Technology Department at BEEAH Group.
