AUS empowers faculty excellence and innovation with College of Engineering endowed chairs
In recognition of their exceptional achievements in research, teaching and industry collaboration, three faculty members in the American University of Sharjah (AUS) College of Engineering have recently been appointed as endowed chairs.
As the new Petrofac Chair in Renewable Energy, Dr. Amani Al-Othman from the Department of Chemical Engineering has showcased exceptional expertise in fuel cells and renewable energy applications. Her groundbreaking research on fuel cell membranes, hydrogen technology, supercapacitors and self-cleaning solar cells has earned her numerous accolades, including the College of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award (2019) and the Excellence in Research Award (2022). Additionally, she has consistently ranked as AUS’ most cited researcher for the past three years. Dr. Al-Othman expressed her gratitude, stating: "I am honored to hold the Petrofac Chair in Renewable Energy. This recognition reinforces my commitment to furthering sustainable energy solutions through innovative research."
Dr. Mehdi Ghommem from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, appointed as the new Dana Gas Chair in Engineering, brings invaluable industry experience to his role. His research in nonlinear dynamics, MEMS design and analysis and bio-robotics has resulted in numerous journal publications and patents. He was the recipient of the CEN Excellence in Research Award (2020) and the CEN Outstanding International Collaboration Award (2023). Dr. Ghommem remarked: "As the Dana Gas Chair in Engineering, I am privileged to contribute to cutting-edge advancements in engineering. This appointment motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of knowledge and fostering innovation."
Recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field, Dr. Rami Hawileh from the Department of Civil Engineering is the new Riad T. Sadek Chair in Civil Engineering. With a focus on reinforced concrete structures, sustainable design and computational modeling, Dr. Hawileh has published extensively and earned prestigious awards, including the College of Engineering Research Excellence Award. Reflecting on his achievement, Dr. Hawileh said: "I am deeply honored to be appointed as the Riad T. Sadek Chair in Civil Engineering. I remain dedicated to advancing research and education in sustainable infrastructure."
