American University of Sharjah (AUS) held an informative and interactive seminar entitled "Helping Students Successfully Transition from High School to University" on January 14 on campus. The seminar, organized by the Office of Enrollment Management, focused on the American liberal studies model at universities, mainly AUS, in addition to challenges and opportunities of the freshman year.
Several instructors from Sharakah schools attended the seminar. Dr. Mehvash Ali, Director AUS Academic Support Center, identified the characteristics of an American liberal studies model, general education requirements at AUS, the right selection of majors, and much more.Dr. Ali also explained the difference between a community college, a technical college, a college and university. This is important to convey to freshmen students in order for them to understand which school meets their needs.
The seminar also focused on AUS, its organizational structure and what it offers students both academically and in terms of extracurricular activities.
In addition, Dr. Ali discussed with the participants different forms of teaching and highlighted critical evaluation, independent thinking and supplementary readings as being important for success.
