AUS professor contributes to significant new database of scholarly research on women and gender in the Arab Region
A significant new database of scholarly research on women and gender in the Arab region has been released with participation from American University of Sharjah (AUS) professor Dr. Nawar Al-Hassan Golley.
Dr. Golley, Professor in English and an expert in the field of women’s studies, was a team member of the project The Mapping the Production of Knowledge on Women and Gender in the Arab Region (MPK). With a team of researchers from six renowned universities, the MPK Project has launched the MPK Database, a groundbreaking online resource offering access to 20,000 academic articles on women and gender in the Arab Region. This innovative database is the first-ever comprehensive resource facilitating comparative analysis of research from 1970 to 2022 and covers a wide array of topics within six key themes including class and ethnicity, media and religion, among other themes.
In addition to providing access to academic resources, the MPK team will publish analyses and findings based on the database on the MPK website and in relevant academic journals. Full instructions on how to use the database are available on the MPK website.
“This new database, on the thematic of socialities, will help researchers, especially young scholars, identify the gaps in the existing research, understand methodologies of knowledge production, and carry out analytical and innovative research in the field of gender and women’s studies in the Arab region,” elaborated Dr. Golley.
This database is a collaborative project developed by the University of California Davis Arab Region Consortium (UCDAR). The MPK project team includes scholars and graduate students from UCDAR and partner institutions American University of Beirut, American University in Cairo, Lebanese American University, Birzeit University, American University of Sharjah, and the University of California Davis. The project was funded by the Open Society Foundation in Amman, Jordan, and supported by the Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS), Beirut, Lebanon.
Accessing the MPK Database is free and publicly available. It offers an easy-to-use, searchable interface that provides direct links to articles related to search keywords. Subscribed institutions from which a reference is listed are granted full access to an article, whereas institutions that are not subscribed can view the reference and, when available, the abstract.
