AUS professor showcases new work at CAAD Gallery
New work by Mark Pilkington, Professor of Art and Design at the AUS College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD), is currently on display at the CAAD Gallery on campus. The exhibition comprises work made last semester during a visit to Sri Lanka and during the summer when he was on the island of Gozo, Malta.
Pilkington’s work is typically characterized by a concern for the individual and their relationship with belonging and/or longing, and this exhibition further explores that theme both as stills and as time-based work. The engaging photographs made in Sri Lanka, however, represent a slight a departure from this theme. These photographs are blurred, so reading of the image relies more on feeling than actual recognition of the subject matter. The work is reminiscent of the late 19th and early 20th century pictorial school of photography.
As part of the exhibition opening on October 23, Professor Pilkington spoke about his work and contemporary issues related to photography in a discussion with Kathryn Best, Associate Professor of Art and Design at CAAD. The discussion was attended by , AUS Provost, and Dr. Varkki Pallathucheril, Dean of CAAD, along with the college’s faculty members and students.
Commenting on the event, Professor Pilkington said:
“It was great to see so many students at the session, and I was impressed by their level of engagement, and questions. The event provided an opportunity for the AUS community to witness and engage in conversation related to contemporary attitudes toward art practice. I believe the CAAD Gallery provides a valuable opportunity for both exhibiting work professionally as well as sharing with students.”
The exhibition runs until October 28, 2017.
