AUS remembers Dr. Ibrahim El Sadek
A year ago today, the American University of Sharjah(AUS) community was left reeling by the sudden and unexpected death of Dr.Ibrahim El Sadek, former Associate Dean of the AUS College of Arts andSciences, on Sunday, July 1, 2012. Current andformer AUS students, faculty and staff took to social media to express theircondolences for his passing and to pay their tributes to this legendary professor.
Responding to suggestions made by AUS students andalumni over the last year, AUS honored the legacy of this beloved professor andestablished two scholarship funds to commemorate his memory; the Dr. Ibrahim ElSadek Memorial Scholarship Fund, run by the university administration as wellas the Dr. Ibrahim El Sadek Alumni Scholarship Fund, managed by the AUS AlumniAssociation.
In addition to this, in its last meeting, the AUSboard of trustees awarded posthumously the title of Professor Emeritus to thelate Dr. Ibrahim Sadek for his professional qualifications andcommitment to the university.
"Time has not dimmed for any of us our fond memoriesof Ibrahim," commented Acting Chancellor Thomas Hochstettler in commemorationof the anniversary of Dr. Sadek's death. "The true measure of his impact on the lives of everyone he knew at AUSare the enduring, myriad small elements of daily life that he influenced, bothdirectly and indirectly, during his years among us and that continue to enrichour experience every day. His legacywill continue for generations to come, and we mourn his passing every bit asmuch today as we did a year ago."
In his professional life, the legendary professor wasawarded numerous awards including, Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award fromthe University of California, Outstanding Teaching Award from the Queen'sUniversity at Kingston, Canada and University of North Carolina at WilmingtonAward for Excellence in Scholarship, Research and Creativity from theUniversity of North Carolina at Wilmington.
