AUS student athletes and active students awarded scholarships
Thirty-five AUS students have been awarded scholarships for their excellence in sports and outstanding participation in extracurricular activities.
The scholarships, each entitling the recipients to an award of up to 25 percent tuition remission for Fall Semester 2019, were presented by Professor Kevin Mitchell, AUS Chancellor, on September 10.
Extracurricular activities are an important part of AUS student life. There are 26 sports teams and 72 student-led clubs available on campus, helping to shape the student experience.
The AUS Athletic Scholarship recognizes talented student athletes who excel in sports, exhibit good sportsmanship and dedication, and establish a record of consistent participation. The scholarship program aims to encourage student participation, develop sports at the university and promote the role of athletics in an American model of higher education.
Senior student Karim Nagy Hamed, captain of the AUS soccer team, was one of the recipients of the scholarship and was also named Athlete of the Year. Speaking about his experience playing for AUS, he said:
“I played soccer even before I joined AUS. Soccer is not a hobby for me but a passion, and playing for AUS was a beautiful experience. The coach here is very experienced and has played for major national teams. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve also had a number of great opportunities where we played against other university teams and travelled abroad to compete in Italy and Greece. The AUS Active Student Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students who demonstrate excellence in extracurricular activities, and whose efforts yield exceptional results and inspire other students to become high achievers.
Senior chemical engineering student Mariyam Siddique was one of the recipients of the AUS Active Student Scholarship. She volunteered for community service programs in her first two years at AUS and then joined the Student Leadership Program as a peer leader. She went on to join the Motor Enthusiast Club as treasurer last semester, and then became the Vice President of the Association of Women Engineers and a team leader in the Student Leadership Program.
Speaking about her journey as an active student, she said:
“When I first joined AUS I was timid and shy. I came from an all-girls school, so the whole environment at AUS was new to me and it took me time to adjust. Joining all of these activities pushed me out of my comfort zone. I met with people who were different and who came from various backgrounds. My experiences aided my growth, and I attribute my public speaking skills to my involvement in these activities.”
