College of Engineering overall champion in AUS Battle of the Colleges Sports Tournament
The American University of Sharjah’s (AUS) College of Engineering (CEN) was crowned overall champion at the AUS Battle of the Colleges Sports Tournament. The victory follows two weeks of high-spirited competitions in more than 100 matches across 13 sports disciplines involving 880 students from the university’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD), School of Business Administration (SBA), CEN and the Achievement Academy Bridge Program.
Organized by the Student Athletics and Recreation Department (SARD) in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) from October 16 to 26, the AUS Battle of the Colleges is an annual event that recognizes AUS’ sports spirit, promotes fair play and celebrates diversity.
Men’s and women’s teams competed in soccer, volleyball, basketball, cricket, powerlifting, table tennis, badminton, tennis, squash, chess, Jiu-Jitsu, swimming and track events. Students were recognized at an award ceremony by Dr. Tod Laursen, Chancellor of AUS, in five main categories: overall champion, ideal athlete, individual sport (college), individual sport (students) and team championship.
“I feel great gratitude and admiration for the remarkable teamwork displayed during the tournament. The collaboration between the Student Athletics and Recreation Department and our AUS colleges/school has truly exemplified the spirit of unity, sportsmanship and excellence. This event not only showcased the athletic talents of our students but also the strong sense of community that thrives within the AUS campus,” said Solomon Aruparayil, Acting Director of SARD.
Not only did AUS Battle of the Colleges strengthen cooperation among academic departments, it gave students the chance to develop leadership skills while promoting team spirit and friendship. More than 30 student college representatives helped organize the event. It also offered AUS students an opportunity to socialize and network in a fun, casual setting amid the cheers and sports excitement.
“As a player in the men's volleyball league, I thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. It was a well-organized event that provided a great opportunity for students to compete in their favorite sports and socialize with each other. The timing of the tournament was also important as it came during a period when all students needed a break from academics and were able to relax and enjoy themselves. Although I only played volleyball, it was great seeing such a huge number of my friends play both individual sports as well as team sports. Also, the chancellor's presence at the awards ceremony was great as he awarded the winners. The Battle of the Colleges tournament was a great success. I would like to thank all the coaches and organizers for their hard work and dedication,” said student Mo’men Aldahshan, Public Relations Officer, AUS Student Council.
Chancellor Laursen thanked the students for exhibiting good sportsmanship.
“I'm thrilled to be a part of this exceptional event, and I can see that it's all of you who make it truly special. Congratulations to the teams and the winners, and I'm eagerly looking forward to meeting all of you on campus,” said Chancellor Laursen.
