Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi named inaugural Senior Fellow at AUS
As part of American University of Sharjah’s (AUS) long-standing tradition of fostering academic excellence and cultivating a vibrant intellectual environment, the university has bestowed the title of Senior Fellow in the AUS College of Engineering (CEN) on His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Former Minister of Climate Change and Environment and Former Minister of Infrastructure Development in the UAE.
Senior Fellow is a newly established position by the AUS Board of Trustees following its Fall 2023 meeting. The title is bestowed upon individuals who have consistently surpassed the expectations of their roles, made significant contributions to Sharjah and the United Arab Emirates, and are prominent leaders of the private or public sectors.
The announcement was made last week during the 50th International Conference on Computer and Industrial Engineering by Dr. Tod Laursen, Chancellor of AUS, and in the presence of Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of AUS.
“Senior Fellows bring a wealth of experience and expertise to our university community. Their dedicated involvement in mentorship and advising serves as a substantial asset to students, staff and faculty, significantly enhancing the overall educational environment. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Al Nuaimi as the inaugural Senior Fellow at AUS, and we eagerly anticipate the contributions he will make as he shares his extensive experience and knowledge with our students,” said Dr. Laursen.
A respected figure in the field of climate change and environmental policy and former Minister of Climate Change and Environment in the UAE, Dr. Al Nuaimi played a pivotal role in shaping and executing the UAE's climate resilience and ecosystem protection strategies through the formulation of impactful policies and initiatives. Beyond his ministerial duties, he chaired the UAE Council for Climate Change and Environment and the National Biosecurity Committee. Prior to this, he held the position of Minister of Infrastructure Development, during which he was a driving force behind the advancement of federal infrastructure projects, including inter-emirate highways and government facilities. He also presided over the Sheikh Zayed Housing Program and the Federal Transport Authority.
“Dr. Al Nuaimi brings unique perspectives acquired throughout his rich career. This diversity of experience serves as a catalyst for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration through creating opportunities for pioneering research and meaningful dialogue. His appointment as a Senior Fellow within CEN reinforces our university's core values of academic excellence, community engagement and leadership,” said Dr. Fadi Aloul, Dean of CEN.
As part of his duties, Dr. Al Nuaimi will be delivering guest lectures, seminars and workshops in engineering graduate and undergraduate programs as part of the regular course offerings. He will also engage with students and alumni, mentor and advise students, engage with industry and governmental partners, participate in research projects, promote the college and university, and serve as a role model, a leader and an advocate for AUS values.
“I am deeply humbled to be recognized as a Senior Fellow by AUS. This title isn't just an accolade, but a commitment to mentorship, guest lecturing and thought leadership. I wholeheartedly accept this honor, and I am eager to contribute even more to the AUS community,” said Dr. Al Nuaimi.
