Sharjah Police and AUS Executive Education collaborate to enhance English proficiency
Over 25 members of the Sharjah Police Department have completed an Executive Certificate in English Language Development designed and delivered by Executive Education at American University of Sharjah (AUS). Designed for those who have English as a second language, the eight-week program will help all Sharjah Police employees achieve the English level required to communicate freely with their colleagues and stakeholders.
Those completing the program were exposed to important areas of English language development including reading and writing, listening comprehension, conversations and speaking skills. Participants took part in a number of face-to-face sessions, as well as completing modules using the AUS online learning facilities. Emphasis was placed on having participants acquire the skills necessary for the performance of their role, such as being able to write briefs and reports and conduct interviews with native English speakers. The program also built the cross-cultural understanding and confidence of participants.
The faculty responsible for the development and delivery of the program from the English Department of AUS’ College of Arts and Sciences include leading English language experts who hold PhDs from prestigious universities in the United States and United Kingdom. Director of Executive Education at American University of Sharjah, Dr. Ilias Visvikis said the quality of the faculty involved helps to ensure an optimal result for participants, and their organization.
“Programs such as this are a fantastic way to transport the knowledge and experience of AUS’ world-class faculty to the wider community. AUS faculty, including those involved in this program are at the forefront of teaching and learning in their fields, and it is great to see external AUS stakeholders, such as the Sharjah Police, benefit from this expertise,” he said.
