AUS celebrates engineering shadow mentorship for high school students
The American University of Sharjah (AUS) College of Engineering (CEN) recently celebrated more than 80 high school students in the presence of their families and over 70 AUS student mentors for their participation in the Engineering Shadow Program.
Held during the spring and fall semesters of 2023, the Engineering Shadow Program offered high school students in grades 11 and 12 insight into the life of an AUS engineering student. The participants, known as shadows, spent a day with AUS student mentors majoring in their areas of interest. Through this experience, they attended classes, interacted with professors and engaged with college administrators, gaining comprehensive and practical knowledge about the diverse opportunities in engineering.
"As part of CEN’s Discover Engineering campaign, this initiative stands as a pillar of our commitment to inspire future engineers. The dedication and enthusiasm of our mentors and shadows mirror the dynamic educational climate at AUS. We're proud to build this crucial bridge between high school and university education and are excited to nurture a culture of continued excellence," said Dr. Fadi Aloul, Dean of CEN.
The program is led by Dr. Rana Sabouni, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.
"Through the Engineering Shadow Program, our student mentors play a crucial role in guiding high school students through the practical and theoretical aspects of engineering. This experience is pivotal for students pondering their future careers, as it answers many questions about the diverse fields in engineering, enriching their decision-making process," said Dr. Sabouni.
Bedoor Alhamdany, a grade 12 student from Al Zuhour Private School, shared her experience: "My mentor was knowledgeable and patient. I had the opportunity to attend her senior class, as well as tour the various labs and facilities available. She was incredibly supportive, thoroughly addressing all of my queries and concerns about the major.”
CEN's Discover Engineering campaign, launched in Fall 2022, encompasses an array of activities including bootcamps, workshops, competitions, pre-university enrichment visits, the Engineering Shadow Program, Engineering Open Day and High School Counselors Day.
