AUS Club Fair 2010 proves a popular draw
The official opening of the two-day semiannual Club Fair held at American University of Sharjah (AUS) today, October 11, attracted a large number of students, faculty, staff and members of the campus community. With 58 student-sponsored clubs and organizations participating, the event, which was held at the AUS Student Center, proved a popular draw once again as it featured both ethnic and interest-oriented clubs on campus. The fair gives students the opportunity to learn about and join clubs and activities that suit their needs and ambitions.
"Events such as this reflect the university's much admired multicultural environment," said Dr. Peter Heath, Chancellor of AUS.
Colorful stalls with national flags, posters, multimedia displays and music livened up the fair. Many students wore their national dress, reflecting the vibrant, international environment prevalent on campus. Four new clubs and organizations made their debut at the fair this year. "The Club Fair introduces scores of cultural clubs and organizations we have on campus to students. We are very proud of the fact that AUS is a truly multicultural university," said Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
The fair is organized by the AUS Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at the start of each semester with the aim of introducing AUS students, faculty and staff to the various student clubs and organizations available on campus. Among the organizations participating in the fair are the Emirati Club, Lebanese Club, Russian Club, Turkish Club, Nigerian Club, Music Club, Mechanical Engineering Club, Debate Club, Innovators Club and many others.
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdullah Al Thani, Director-General of the Office of the President of AUS; Dr. Thomas Hochstettler, Provost; Salem Al Qaseer, Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs; Munketh Taha, Director of Student Development and Organizations; and other senior university officials also attended the opening ceremony.
