AUS student volunteers host visually impaired students on campus

American University of Sharjah (AUS) Community Services, in collaboration with the Emirates Association for the Visually Impaired, organized a visit for a group of visually impaired students to the AUS Library recently. The purpose of the visit was to give the students a tour of the library, read out books, engage in discussions and to give them a sense of the facilities available at the library and the campus. 

Thirty six student volunteers assisted the nine visually impaired students on their visit to AUS. They discussed  life goals, ambitions, experiences, the issue of inclusion in the workforce and improvements required by society in general.

 Ahmed Eladl, a volunteer and a senior engineering student, said:

“I felt really inspired and grateful that I can contribute towards such a cause and help those with special needs. I learned a great deal from them.”

The visit was highly successful as the guests were very happy with the time they spent with the volunteers and appreciated the effort put in by volunteers. 

“This is a unique experience for our student volunteers as they gained an understanding of how the visually impaired cope with their daily tasks and carry on with their lives. I am glad that our guests enjoyed the visit and the experience to interact with our students, get a feel of the campus and explore the many learning resources at the AUS library,” said Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Dean of Students.
