CEN students win first place at ADIPEC competition
A team of four engineering students from American University of Sharjah (AUS) Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) chapter won first place at the SPE ADIPEC (Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference) University Program held recently. The team members were Faris Al Ajnahi, Vikran Sakkia, Nasir Mohammed Khalil and Jason Rodrigues.
Chosen by the steering committee, this year’s project title was "Future beyond the oil: crude oil–to–chemicals.” Crude oil-to-chemicals (COTC) is the technological advancement which allows achieving direct conversion from crude oil to chemicals as opposed to via traditional thermal cracking or refining reforming.
During the three-day program, students participated in technical and professional skills sessions, networked with companies in the industry, young professionals and other students.
Judging focused on the novelty and originality of the work, methodology and criteria of selection, project results and discussion and professionalism of the presentation. The AUS team won among 17 finalist teams from Pakistan, KSA, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt and the UAE.
Dr. Nai-Shyong Yeh, Professor of Practice in Petroleum Engineering, and team advisor said:
“The purpose of the SPE ADIPEC University Program is to give students a clear insight of the industry that they are about to join, to allow them to return to their universities and colleges with a positive message to relate to their fellow students, and to provide opportunities for students to form new friendships and to work together on joint activities. At the same time, the students interacted with a number of major industry employers who are constantly looking to recruit the best talent from institutions across the UAE.”
The AUS SPE chapter promotes participation in various internal and external activities to better understand the oil and gas industry, technical and non-technical knowledge and potential personal development in the industry through networking.
