Bassam El Taher: Detecting mercury in marine environments

The World Health Organization considers mercury poisoning as one of the deadliest threats to humans. Environmental pollution has caused mercury to pollute 80 percent of the world’s seafood in oceans and aquatic farms, posing a global threat to public health.

Graduating with a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering, Bassam El Taher's research has focused on developing a real-time monitoring system that immediately detects low levels of mercury in water environments. The system integrates a sensing device with a metal organic framework (MOF) coating. When exposed to water, the coated sensor instantly detects mercury at levels as low as 0.116 mg (0.000023 teaspoons) per liter.

This video explains more about Bassam’s research, which is in collaboration with faculty and researchers from the College of Engineering at AUS.

Batoul Mohsen: A solution for mass water conservation

Huge volumes of water are lost on a global scale every day as a result of leaking underground water pipes, with some cities losing as much as 60 percent of their daily water supply. In addition to its environmental impact, this water loss creates financial loss for governments and consumers.

In collaboration with Dr. Md Maruf Morula from the College of Engineering, Master of Science in Civil Engineering graduate Batoul Mohsen has been working to address this problem and develop a solution using hyperspectral imaging system. The system detects underground pipe leakages using drones and infra-red imaging at a consistently high level of accuracy, and has drawn interest and support from local governments across the UAE.

Watch this video to learn more about Batoul’s research.

Tia Bendaly: From international studies to study abroad

As a student of international studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at AUS, Tia Bendaly saw no better way of enhancing her learning experience than with a semester abroad at the University of Central Lancashire, England. Taking advantage of the chance to study new subjects, such as forensic science and British politics, and experience small-town English life (and a trip or two to London), Tia’s study abroad experience made a big impact on her plans for the future.

“I think having a study abroad experience is an advantage when looking for internships and jobs because it shows employers that you are able to adapt to changing circumstances, are independent and self-reliant and so on. My experience also solidified the fact that I want to continue my studies in the UK. I plan on interning in London and going to grad school at the University of Law,” she said.

Zainab Mohamed Alghareeb: Study tour becomes “trip of first times”

Chemical engineering graduate Zainab Mohamed Alghareeb had the opportunity to join the American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AICHE) study tour to Indonesia over the winter break in January 2020, just ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic. The trip was incredibly impactful for her and a major highlight of Zainab’s AUS experience.

“I can absolutely say that this trip to Indonesia was one of the best things I have ever done during my university experience. As a chemical engineering major, it was interesting to me to see university life at the University of Indonesia and work life in Halliburton Indonesia and how different it is from the UAE.”

“Not only was I able to benefit from the academic outings, but I also got to enjoy a week full of activities with an amazing group of people. I call this trip ‘the trip of first times’: I got to try rafting, ATV and the Bali Swing for the first time.”

“More than anything, I enjoyed the company I had; the people in the tour made it 10 times better. It is crazy how I was able to build amazing friendships and get attached to those who were on the trip in the span of one week! It was one week that I will forever cherish and remember, and if I could go back and repeat it, I definitely would.”

Brylle Ryan Gomez: From group project to award-winning innovation

Computer engineering graduate Brylle Ryan Gomez ends his AUS experience on a high after winning a regional Global Undergraduate Awards for a team project that will dramatically impact the work of wildlife photographers and ecologists.

The innovative project utilizies deep learning and the Internet of Things (IoT) to develop a system that helps label camera traps used to capture images of animals in the wild. In order to capture images of animals, ecologists place camera traps in the wild for months; this is followed by a tedious and time-consuming process where thousands of images are manually analyzed. To speed up this process, the AUS team developed a system that instantly labels an image as soon as it is captured by a camera trap and sends a notification to the ecologist’s mobile application, detailing the type of animal, the time image was taken, and the location.

Brylle’s team—including computer engineering alumni Ali Reza Sajun, Lana Alhaj Hussein and Dara Sakhnini—worked together with Emirates Nature-WWF, which provided them with guidance and data throughout the process. The team worked under the guidance of Dr. Imran Zualkernan and Dr. Salam Dhou from the College of Engineering, along with Dr. Jacky Judas from Emirates Nature-WWF.

Muaaz Farouk Adra: Leaving a lasting legacy

Industrial engineering graduate Muaaz Farouk Adra has certainly made the most of his time at AUS. Over the past four years, Muaaz has taken every opportunity to build his legacy as an AUS student leader and role model across a wide range of AUS platforms.

From leading new students through orientation as a Peer Leader and Advisor, to advocating for a more sustainable campus as an EcoRep, leading the AUS Model United Nations (AUSMUN) as Secretary-General, working as CEO for a day with Jaguar Land Rover, and even representing AUS at the International Youth Leadership Conference in South Africa in 2019, Muaaz has truly embraced the AUS student experience.

Speaking of his legacy as an EcoRep, Muaaz said: “My aim as a student at AUS has always been to raise awareness about sustainability and sustainable behavior. I hope my efforts as an EcoRep can contribute to making sustainability a priority among students and faculty on campus. As an engineering student, I understand the importance of sustainability for my career path as nowadays any business and organization is focused on having a more sustainable footprint."

Watch this video see Muazz and his fellow EcoReps in action.

Azka Tariq: Making change for good

Marketing graduate Azka Tariq leaves AUS having made a priceless impact on the Sharjah community, with plans to continue her good work beyond university.

Recipient of the 2019–2020 Active Student Scholarship for Community Service, Azka took part in an initiative to change the life of a mother and her three children by renovating and refurnishing their home earlier this year. The project was part of the bi-annual AUS Hand-in-Hand social initiative that was started in 2009 by the Community Service and Outreach unit at the university. The initiative aims at making a meaningful contribution to the community through AUS student volunteers. The project this year was done in collaboration with the Sharjah Social Empowerment Foundation (SSEF).

“This was my fourth project working with AUS Community Service and Outreach. I got hooked the first time I worked with them. Volunteering helped me develop at the personal level and it made me more responsible. I realized that there is more to the world outside the bubble we live in.”

“I loved working with orphans before, and I am genuinely thinking about adopting or caring for one. I would encourage everyone to volunteer because it will change the way you look at life. We think sometimes that we have a hard life, but then you realize there are people who are not as fortunate as you are and you can make a positive impact in their lives.”

Hudaa Roshan: Architecture student to CEO for a Day

Architecture graduate Hudaa Roshan leaves AUS armed with an outstanding portfolio of work, as well as professional experience that is sure to impress any future employer.

In October 2019, Huda had the opportunity to work with the CEO of Atkins as part of the Odgers Berndtson CEOX1Day program. The program offers local business leaders a chance to give back to the community by mentoring an elite group of university students for a day or more, providing them with insight into the world of leadership.

Placed with one of the world’s most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Huda, giving her the chance to understand the market, and learn about leadership and how to handle responsibilities at a senior level.

“It is very important to combine that sort of experience with our education,” she said.

"The most interesting aspect was meeting the graduates from Atkins' graduate program and learning about their personal transition from academia to professional practice. This program allows for architects and civil engineers to pursue a British chartership while balancing work. It is opportunities like these that help people grow and become more accomplished in their field."

Beyond this remarkable experience, Huda has had the opportunity to work on professional projects, participate in global competitions and immerse herself in CAAD’s culture of making as part of the Bachelor of Architecture program, which is ranked number one in the UAE, according to QS World University Subject Rankings.
