The Minor in Safety and Fire Protection Engineering is designed to provide engineering students with a strong foundation in safety and fire protection with a focus on improving safety in industrial facilities and buildings. Feedback from the various industrial advisory boards, students, alumni and Sharjah Civil Defense have supported the development of this new minor and indicated a strong demand for graduates with a safety and fire engineering background.
The current design of the new minor is open to students of all majors at AUS and aimed, more specifically, at engineering majors.
Safety and fire protection engineering involves the analysis, design and operation of buildings, plant, equipment, processes and people in order to protect employees, the public, and assets. This is achieved by identifying hazards and risks and implementing measures to minimize accidents and near misses. Recent large fires and other safety incidents in residential and industrial complexes across the UAE and the region have triggered a need for greater expertise in the safe design, operation and management of infrastructure and industrial facilities.
AUS industrial advisory board members have, over recent years, continued to press the importance of imbedding safety concepts within the curricula and have highlighted the need for graduates with a strong foundation in these areas. Safety and fire engineers can work in large industrial facilities, civil defense departments, consulting firms and agencies, fire equipment and systems companies, fire testing laboratories, insurance industry, forensic investigations, and health care facilities. This minor will serve the needs of industry and society as well as enhancing the employment opportunities for our students in the UAE, the GCC region, and beyond.

Courses used to satisfy the student’s degree program’s graduation requirements cannot be used towards meeting the requirements of the minor.
Students pursuing two minors must meet the requirements of both minors. Courses used to satisfy the requirements of one minor can double count towards satisfying the requirements of the second minor provided that, at a minimum, 12 credit hours are not double counting.
Students seeking a minor in Safety and Fire Protection Engineering must successfully complete the following courses or their equivalent. All course prerequisites must be satisfied.
Minor Requirements (12 credits hours)
