AUS accounting student named among top recipients of prestigious US scholarship
When Mohammed Arman Chy first stepped onto the American University of Sharjah (AUS) campus, he wasn’t just looking for a degree—he was searching for a place to grow, to lead and to make a difference. Two years later, that vision has come full circle with international recognition for his achievements, purpose-driven leadership and academic excellence.
The sophomore accounting student has been awarded the Jo Anne J. Trow Undergraduate Scholarship, a highly selective US $3,000 honor granted by the Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) National Honor Society for First-Year Academic Success. Arman was one of only 50 students selected to receive the scholarship from hundreds of university ALD chapters—earning AUS a proud place on the map of academic and leadership excellence.
“This milestone reflects the spirit of AUS,” said Arman. “It’s about academic excellence, but more importantly, it’s about leading with purpose and contributing to the campus community that has shaped my journey.”
The Jo Anne J. Trow Undergraduate Scholarship, named after one of the founding leaders of Alpha Lambda Delta, is awarded annually to sophomore students who exemplify outstanding academic achievement, leadership and service. Candidates must maintain a GPA above 3.5, submit a comprehensive application and be endorsed by faculty. Arman’s portfolio highlighted his cross-campus leadership, student development initiatives and vision for social impact.
With a CGPA of 3.78, repeated academic recognition, and involvement in over 10 student organizations, Arman has built a record of excellence in and out of the classroom. He currently serves as Public Relations Officer on the AUS Student Council Executive Board, President of the Bangladeshi Cultural Club, and President of The Accounting Society, alongside playing an active role in the Creative Writing Club, Supply Chain Society, Careers Club and AUS Model United Nations. He is also a Student Ambassador for both the Academic Support Center and the Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution Office.
Over the past two years, Arman has led and executed more than 40 large-scale events at AUS—ranging from cultural festivals and academic workshops to charity fundraisers and networking forums with industry leaders. His work has included collaborations with organizations such as and the Federal Tax Authority, and has helped secure over 15 sponsorships and strengthen alumni engagement. His efforts led to a 400 percent membership increase in the clubs he is part of, and the student engagement models he introduced have since been adopted by other groups across campus.
“AUS gave me the opportunity to lead, to collaborate with peers from different cultures and to grow through real-world experiences,” Arman said. “Being part of this diverse and supportive environment helped me connect my academic interests with a broader sense of purpose.”
Arman’s journey has already been recognized through multiple honors, including the First Year Leadership Award, Dean’s List Scholarship (three times), Chancellor’s List Scholarship, AUS Active Student Scholarship, AUS Exceptional Student Scholarship and induction into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
ALD is a US-based certified national honor society that recognizes academic excellence among first-year university students, with almost 300 chapters across the US and over one million student members. At American University of Sharjah (AUS), ALD is part of the First Year Experience Program offered by the AUS Academic Support Center, supporting students’ transition into university life. The ALD AUS Chapter was launched in 2021 and currently has over 300 members. AUS is one of only two ALD chapters in the MENA region as of Fall 2024—and the only one whose students have received three prestigious ALD awards—further cementing the university’s distinction as a regional leader in academic success and student development.
Looking ahead, Arman aspires to become a Certified Public Accountant and launch a firm dedicated to financial empowerment and social good, with his vision rooted in using business strategy to create inclusive economic impact.
“I hope this award encourages other students to take initiative, stay engaged and realize that leadership begins with action. Each small step—every event, every collaboration—can shape a legacy,” he said.
AUS is ranked #1 (tied) in the UAE and among the top 250 universities globally for accounting and finance, according to the QS World University Rankings 2025—a reflection of the university’s strong academic foundation and international reputation. Through a dynamic curriculum, faculty mentorship and industry engagement, the AUS School of Business Administration equips students with the analytical skills, ethical grounding and leadership mindset needed to thrive in today’s global business environment.
