AUS engineering research forum explores sustainable solutions and fosters collaboration
The American University of Sharjah (AUS) College of Engineering (CEN) recently hosted its inaugural Engineering Endowed Chairs Research Forum, focusing on pivotal topics such as low carbon emissions solutions for sustainable buildings and infrastructures, energy efficiency and management, and fire safety and hazards risk management.
Dr. Fadi Aloul, Dean of CEN, welcomed the attendees and emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing sustainability challenges.
“No university can work in isolation, neither can a company nor a government. Today, as we gather to explore sustainable solutions, let us recognize the power of collaboration. We envision a strategic ecosystem where academia, industry and government unite to confront the challenges of sustainability head-on. Together, we will not only identify these challenges but work tirelessly to solve them. Let us listen to the voices of experts, engage with decision-makers, and forge partnerships that will drive innovation and create a sustainable future for all."
Attendees engaged with presentations by the engineering endowed chairs: Dr. Amani Al-Othman, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Petrofac Chair in Renewable Energy; Dr. Mehdi Ghommem, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dana Gas Chair in Engineering; and Dr. Rami Hawileh, Department of Civil Engineering, Riad T. Sadek Chair in Civil Engineering. These presentations enriched their understanding of cutting-edge research initiatives and innovations within the field.
“The forum provided a valuable platform for meaningful dialogue and collaboration. By bringing together diverse perspectives from academia and industry, we can drive innovation and advance renewable and sustainable energy solutions," said Dr. Al-Othman.
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Ghommem remarked, "Collaboration is key to tackling complex challenges. The forum demonstrated the power of partnership in addressing critical issues and creating sustainable solutions."
Dr. Hawileh emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in shaping the future of infrastructure. "Through initiatives like this forum, we can leverage our collective expertise to build resilient communities and infrastructure," he remarked.
A notable aspect of the forum was the roundtable discussion, which brought together representatives from prominent organizations including Petrofac, Dana Gas, Sharjah Sustainable City, Sharjah Civil Defense Authority, and Asian Paints. Throughout the discussion, participants shared insights, success stories and best practices related to collaborative research efforts. They also delved into common challenges and strategies for overcoming them, exchanging ideas to initiate and strengthen collaborative projects.
Endowed chair positions provide ongoing financial support for a distinguished faculty member in a specific field, allowing them to conduct research and share their discoveries. These positions attract top talent and enhance the university’s academic standing.
