AUS students take part in Women in Sustainability event
Students from the Student Leadership Program (SLP) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) participated in the Women in Sustainability event on January 20, 2015 during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The program consisted of panel discussions that covered topics concerning career progression and views on ways to increase women's participation and leadership in sustainability.
"The forum was of great importance and was well organized. I met many respected Emirati women including Her Excellency Reem Al Hashmi and some important Emirati figures. Through this participation, I was able to link what I studied to the main discussions in the forum," said Najla Al Zarooni, a senior majoring in international relations.
"I was grateful to have the opportunity to attend the Women in Sustainability forum, as I have learned a lot about how can a woman achieve her goals in a sustainable environment," said Hessa Al Samahi, a junior student majoring in international relations. "In addition, one of the panelist speakers said in order to achieve what you want you should not only 'adapt to change' but you should also 'push yourself to change.' If you have passion about your career then don't wait for it to come to you, you should change yourself to get what you want. You can have an important role and be a mother at the same time; it's all about you and what you choose. If you want to be a leader, a chairperson, an entrepreneur, it's up to you; you choose what you want."
"In line with SLP's Women's Leadership and Enrichment Program, the Women in Sustainability event gave students an opportunity to understand the importance of women and their role on future sustainable societies. Students got a chance to network and realize that the integration of women in planning and implementation of sustainable programs is essential," said Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
