AUS students win first and second place at AUD bridge competition

Students from the College of Engineering at American University of Sharjah (AUS) won first and second place in the Annual Wooden Bridge Competition held at American University in Dubai (AUD) recently. Twenty-five teams from universities including AUS, AUD, Abu Dhabi University, University of Sharjah and University of Bolton participated.

The competition consisted of the design, construction and load-testing of a model wooden bridge by student teams. Each team was required to design and build a bridge constructed from wood and glue. Bridges were evaluated based on their load efficiency. A judging panel comprising faculty members from participating universities validated whether the entry bridges had satisfied the competition's requirement prior to testing.
In first place was the AUS team of Abdullah Al Rahmani and Salim Alrai. In second place was the AUS team of Nabeel Ayub Kassim and Mohamad Bin Kalban Bani Wael.

"It's absolutely fantastic to have won. It was also great to get the chance to meet other engineering students," said Arai. "We won because our bridge was simpler than many of the others in the competition, and our simple design meant that we made fewer errors in constructing the design," he added.

"The competition was a great experience for the students as it increased their loyalty to the university and enabled them to expand their horizons and develop team spirit," said Rami Hawileh, Associate Professor in Civil Engineering and faculty advisor to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Club at AUS.
