AUS alumnus recognized in GreenBiz 30 under 30 for leading corporate sustainability efforts
In the dynamic world of sustainability and environmental innovation, the journey of American University of Sharjah (AUS) alumnus Amjad Azmeer to receive the prestigious GreenBiz 30 under 30 honors is nothing short of remarkable.
GreenBiz Group, a leading media and events company committed to advancing the transition to a clean economy, has recognized Azmeer as one of 30 young professionals under 30 driving change in corporate sustainability roles. Azmeer's selection was a result of his work with the UN Global Compact Network Sri Lanka, which has been instrumental in motivating Sri Lankan corporations to embrace Net Zero targets. Using a science-based targets methodology, Azmeer provided companies with a roadmap to align their emissions with a 1.5 degree pathway—a critical step to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and mitigating climate change by reducing emissions by 50 percent by 2030 and eventually reaching net zero by 2050.
"Being selected for GreenBiz 30 under 30 is a tremendous honor. It underscores the importance of our collective efforts in combating climate change and promoting sustainability. Together, we are working towards a more sustainable and resilient future for all," Azmeer said.
Azmeer graduated from AUS with honors in chemical engineering in 2018. During his journey at AUS, he was Vice President of the Engineering Honors Society and an executive assistant for both the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and the Sri Lankan Cultural Club.
"AUS equipped me with the essential skills and knowledge needed to make a significant difference in the field of sustainability. It was within its walls that I discovered the immense potential of uniting science and sustainability to forge a brighter future. During my time at AUS, I delved deep into the foundational principles of engineering while also immersing myself in vital environmental concepts, including the intricacies of air quality, water treatment and waste management," Azmeer remarked.
Azmeer's interest in environmental sustainability led him to pursue a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore, specializing in Water Treatment and Technologies. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. His research focuses on modeling the impact of urban nature based solutions to address climate change challenges in the Middle East.
"Sustainability isn't just an option; it's a necessity for our planet's future. Through my research and collaborations, I aim to contribute to the growing body of knowledge that can help us build a more sustainable world," he said.
Looking forward, Azmeer aspires to increase his impact in the Middle East.
"Born and raised in the UAE, I hold a deep-rooted connection to the region that fuels my commitment to making a difference. I envision a future where my impact in the Middle East extends significantly by assuming the role of a technical consultant dedicated to conducting impactful sustainability research for industries. This includes forging partnerships with various global organizations and universities. Moreover, as a proud alumnus of AUS, I remain steadfast in my commitment to the university. I eagerly anticipate collaborative ventures with my professors, peers and industry experts, with a shared goal of publishing pioneering research in high-impact journals, encompassing a diverse range of critical topics," he said.
AUS is not only dedicated to supporting the UAE's sustainability endeavors but also strives to actively engage its student community in the mission. In line with this commitment, AUS is a valued member of the Universities Climate Network, uniting UAE-based institutions to foster dialogues, workshops, public events and youth involvement in preparation for COP28. AUS' commitment to reducing carbon emissions is demonstrated through its pioneering Climate Action Plan, which aligns with the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 strategic vision. AUS' unwavering support extends to being a key participant in the UAE Alliance for Climate Action (UACA), a domestic coalition orchestrated by Emirates Nature-WWF. This alliance assumes a prominent role as the flagship non-state actor program in the run-up to COP28, championing accelerated progress towards achieving net zero targets aligning with scientific principles and the Paris Agreement.
