AUS College of Engineering attracting the best and brightest students
The American University of Sharjah’s (AUS) College of Engineering (CEN) is a top choice for some of the highest achieving high school students in the UAE and beyond, with 88 percent of the college’s students having achieved 90 percent or above in their high school diploma. Of the students entering the college in the 2021-2022 academic year, 64 percent had achieved 95 percent or above in their secondary school certificate.
These top-tier students are attracted to CEN’s wide choice of accredited undergraduate programs. The college’s programs are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education's Higher Education Affairs Division and the respective commissions of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The college’s students represent 35 nationalities, with 32 percent of the college’s students Emirati.
“We value excellence in teaching, quality research and service, along with the intellectual development of students in a challenging, rewarding academic environment. This is why we seek students who are passionate about knowledge and have a hunger to develop and grow academically and professionally. Every year, we welcome high-achieving high school graduates who want to build a future in engineering. Our programs, world-class faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, diverse student body and high ranking nationally and internationally are all attractive factors for top high school students,” said Dr. Fadi Aloul, Dean of CEN.
He added: “When we look at our current student body at CEN, we are proud to see how far they have grown to become problem solvers, innovators and free thinkers who want to make a difference in the world and contribute to the realization of the UAE Centennial Plan 2071. Our alumni are also a testament to the type of education and training we offer at CEN. We see them today working in some of the most important international and national organizations. Some are successful entrepreneurs with established multi-million-dollar organizations, others are academics working in some of the most prestigious universities around the world. Our alumni also include UAE government officials and ministers influencing policy.”
Mohamad Al Najjar, a EN alumnus, described his AUS experience as “eye-opening.”
“I have changed tremendously in how I interact with people. I used to be a kind of introverted person. I would be very shy in approaching someone for a project or an activity. I have changed a lot in that sense. I really am very active and open with students, and when it comes to activities in sports, cultural events and more. Because I studied at AUS, I am an effective communicator and team player, and I am flexible in working in different environments,” he said.
CEN houses six departments offering seven undergraduate programs: chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and mechanical engineering.
QS World University Subject Rankings (2022) ranked AUS number one in the UAE and among the top 150 universities globally for civil and structural engineering; among the top two (tied) in the UAE and top 300 universities globally for electrical, electronic, mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering; among the top two (tied) in the UAE and top 350 universities globally for chemical engineering; and among the top three in the UAE and top 500 universities globally for computer science and information. AUS engineering graduates have also been ranked as the top choice for employers in the UAE, according to QS World University Subject Rankings (2022).
