AUS honors 470 students at a special convocation ceremony
Sharjah, UAE. November 5, 2021—The academic excellence and achievements of 470 distinguished students at American University of Sharjah (AUS) was celebrated at the Honors Convocation ceremony, yesterday November 4.
The Honors Convocation recognizes and celebrates the achievements of AUS students who attained a GPA of 3.5 in the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters, qualifying them for inclusion on the Chancellor's Distinguished List. In addition, the students must have been registered in a minimum of 15 credit hours, had no incomplete or failing grades in any courses and had no disciplinary action against them. In addition to being recognized at the Honors Convocation, the students are awarded the Chancellor’s List Scholarship.
One hundred and one outstanding students received the Gold Medal, which is given to those being recognized at the Honors Convocation for the third or fourth time. One hundred and twenty-eight students received the Silver Medal, which is awarded to students making their second appearance on the prestigious honors list. The Bronze medal went to 241 students who were being honored at the event for the first time. Out of the total number of students honored this year, 316 were women and 154 were men.
Four exceptional students received the prestigious Sheikh Khalifa Scholarships during the convocation. Awarded to juniors and seniors, the scholarship recognizes academic excellence, leadership potential, service to community, demonstrated talent in the field of study and participation in extracurricular and university activities. Winners are selected through an annual competition conducted within each college/school, and they can receive the scholarship for up to four consecutive semesters or until graduation requirements are complete.
This year’s recipients of the Sheikh Khalifa Scholarships were Sarah Al-Dulaimi from the College of Architecture, Art and Design; Sarah Jamal Al Saeid from the College of Arts and Sciences; Ahmed Muhammad Azmeer from the College of Engineering; and Manaswi Madichetty from the School of Business Administration.
The Chancellor’s List Scholarship and the Sheikh Khalifa Scholarships are part of a comprehensive need- and merit-based financial assistance program offered by AUS.
Nariman Tamer Elewa, who is majoring in psychology with a minor in performing arts, said that she is very proud of herself and her achievements to be on the Chancelor’s List, and even more so by the skills she gained at AUS that helped her develop personally and professionally.
“I am ecstatic to be recognized at the AUS Honors Convocation. I learned throughout my years at AUS that you have to believe in yourself and your abilities to achieve what you want—no matter what that is. It may not happen the first or second time, but if you put your mind to it, you will get there. Wherever I go from here, I plan to use my psychology degree to make a positive impact on others,” said the bronze medalist.
The Honors Convocation this year holds a special place in the heart of Hosam Mahmoud Elgendy, who graduated last June with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a minor in data sciences. “I am really thrilled about the convocation, especially that it is in person this year. I was really looking forward to receiving my gold medal in person. My parents are really happy for me as the Honors Convocation is their favorite event every fall,” said the gold medalist.
Elgendy, who is currently seeking to pursue his graduate studies in artificial intelligence and machine learning, said that he is happy to be visiting AUS again. “I am honored to be recognized at the Honors Convocation and happy to be reunited with my friends whom I have not seen for a long while now,” he said.
Dr. Susan Mumm, Chancellor of AUS, congratulated the students on their success, saying: “It is your unwavering dedication and strong sense of responsibility that allowed you to achieve academic excellence. Perseverance is key to success, and I look forward to seeing all the things you will accomplish in the future.”
