AUS student play Fakreen wins gold award at Rubu’ Qarn Competition
In an inspiring display of theatrical artistry, American University of Sharjah (AUS) students transported the audience into the captivating world of Fakreen with their exceptional acting skills, securing them a gold award at Rubu’ Qarn Competition.
The announcement came during the competition's open day event hosted by the Rubu' Qarn Foundation for Creating Future Leaders and Innovators, established by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi in 2016.
“Securing the gold award for Fakreen, which translates to ‘we remember’ in English, against strong competitors from the University of Sharjah and Al Qasimia University is a testament to our students' innovative spirit and artistic flair,” said Shaima Bin Taliah, Executive Director of Student Experience at AUS.
Written, directed and performed by the students, the play follows university students revisiting their past, highlighting their struggles beyond academics, including personal responsibilities. This is showcased in scenes like one featuring a student with a family in Palestine, revealing the depth of student life challenges.
The winning team comprised AUS students Al Hamza Mahmoud, Rand Al Atrash, Rawan Kadry, Dana Alatrash, Emam Said, Mahmoud Sarhan, Leen Medhat, Mohamed Mahmoud and Amani Saleem, the mother of students Rand and Dana.
Said, an industrial engineering alumnus and a member of the Fakreen cast, shared his experience: “Our dedication over three months of rehearsals was intense, but seeing our efforts culminate in this achievement is immensely rewarding. The hard work we invested in Fakreen truly paid off, making every challenge along the way worthwhile”
In addition to winning the My University Theatre category, AUS was recognized as the Most Cooperative University, affirming its excellence in fostering collaborative education. Individual accolades were also awarded, with Emam Said and Rawan Kadry being named as the Best Talented Youth. Furthermore, the play's directors, Rand Al Atrash and Al Hamza Mahmoud, received recognition as the Best Team Leaders.
“I’m hopeful for more acting opportunities. The bond and collaboration we've developed in the team are enduring, and I am excited about the prospect of us working together again in the future,” Said explained.
AUS places a strong emphasis on the holistic development of its students, actively encouraging participation in a range of extracurricular activities. This approach fosters a vibrant campus life where students can explore diverse interests and talents beyond the classroom.
