AUS teams win top honors at 5G use innovation competition
Student teams from American University of Sharjah (AUS) won first and third place at the Driving the Future of 5G Innovation competition organized by Etisalat, Ericson and Intel. The competition, for engineering students in top UAE universities, had them find the most innovative 5G use cases in UAE industries. The winners were chosen based on parameters that included their business case potential, creativity and innovation, their 5G applicability and their benefit to UAE society.
In first place was the team Plus Alpha, consisting of Jayroop Ramesh, Saad Bashar and Abdullah Ahmed from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, with their project entitled “5G Distributed Cloud Processing,” and advised by Dr. Tarik Ozkul, Professor of Computer Engineering.
Team Innovation, consisting of computer science and engineering major Bashar Aljabery and electrical engineering majors, Marawan Elbaradicy and Mustafa Al Jassim, won third place in the competition. Their project was entitled “5G for Hearing Impaired People,” and advised by Dr. Mahmoud Ibrahim, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Dr. Amer Zakaria, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering.
The competition ran for eight weeks and over 20 teams participated from AUS, NYU Abu Dhabi and Khalifa University.
The winners received tablets and a one month internship opportunity at Etisalat or Ericsson and a three month tailor-made coaching program in Ericsson Garage, with a one week session in Stockholm followed by three months of remote coaching sessions over video conference around topics of students’ choice including sales, marketing, communication and branding, business
